McConnell was rushed to the hospital in mid-June for an undisclosed medical reason, with his spokesperson David Popp issuing a vague statement regarding the reason for the hospitalization. It wasn’t until last week that media outlets learned McConnell had been discovered “unconscious” at his home and had to be administered CPR for potential “cardiac arrest.”

It remains unclear why McConnell’s staff refused to share details, but some, including independent journalist and crypto commentator Adam Cochran, have a theory.

“In Kentucky, a special election to replace a Senator will NOT be called if it’s closer than 3 months till the next election,” Cochran wrote Saturday in a social media post on X. “If McConnell’s condition is clearly unfit for office, they’d hide that to avoid being forced to submit a resignation letter until after that date.”

“So all they have to do is drag their feet until [the second Tuesday in August], then tell you that he didn’t make it,” Cochran continued. “And in turn block Massie from disrupting an otherwise safe Republican seat.”

David Morris, a journalist and author, also appeared to endorse the theory with a brutal jab at McConnell and his legacy.

“Mitch McConnell remaining technically alive for an extra three weeks because of a manipulative procedural maneuver is exactly how he would have wanted to go out,” Morris wrote in a social media post on X.

On the bright side, the fact they’re this desperate smells of weakness. Does America have the stones to exploit this to actually mount an offense against the barbarians raising America to the ground?

The guy who stole 3 seats on the Supreme Court is going to wait out the clock on his own replacement even when he’s likely not even breathing on his own. Fuck everything about this timeline.

    This theory is off base.

The law is for when the vacancy occurs, not when it is disclosed.

If he’s dead before the 2nd Tuesday in August, it doesn’t matter if they wait longer to announce that.

Basically they’ll need to prove he was able to do senator stuff the days leading up to their disclosure date in order to meet the no election deadline.

What’s the August 2nd date about? Do we check yearly whether a senator is dead or something?

I’m pretty sure it’s Aug 5, but it’s 90 days before the midterm election. Kentucky has a law where if a Senator vacates office before that, the Governor (currently a Democrat) appoints a replacement to finish out their term. The conspiracy theory is saying that they’re hiding the fact that he’s unfit to serve in order to keep their slim majority in the House until at least January.

Hypothetically if McConnel did die and they were able to keep it under wraps till, say August 15th - would a snap election occur at that point or would it be viewed that the deadline was missed?

I’m also curious if this has ever occurred before to serve as precedence for now. 302 senators have died in office in the past, so it’s a lot to try and look into I think.

“302 senators have died in office in the past” … really shows how the Senate has too many old bastards staying in office too long. They should be retired while they fade away into death, instead of making important decisions for the country that they will never have to worry about the consequences of.

You can’t cover up a time of death, especially if you need to prove the office is not vacant.

But you can keep the guy on life support and refuse to let anyone see him saying while he is being apprised of what’s going on, he’s too weak to take on visitors right now, so just trust us bro.

In my opinion if an elected official can’t respond to a request for physical proof of fitness for the job by those they supposedly represent then they should automatically be removed from office and elections for a fit replacement is called.

      You might consider fixing that.

Can someone explain the issue here with the three months? It talks about how Massie might make a grab for the seat. What does it matter if it is a special election or regular election? What dynamic changes that makes a regular election more secure than a special election? Is it the primary process?

According to Kentucky election law, independent candidates have until “the second Tuesday in August preceding the regular election” to file to run in the case of a vacancy that occurs after the state’s June filing deadline.

Massie lost the primary last month, in June, for the Kentucky house seat. He is not eligible to run in the standard election coming up.

If McConnell is dead or incapable of holding office, a special election will be held and Massie could make a play for his position.

If he is declared dead with less than 3 months to go before the standard election they will just leave his seat vacant until that time.

So basically they are buying time until the 2nd Tuesday in August to block Massie from running.

lil’ bitch clung to power until he died. And every decision he ever made was to further his own self-interest, or hurt others. A true piece of shit. May he never know peace. May his soul remain forever fragmented and separate from the eternal ethereal coexistence we all will one day share. May he wander forever alone and afraid.
