I haven’t used twitter in ages so I’m a little out of the loop, but just to be clear, there are ads for gas companies? People are out here getting Exxon ads?

I don’t use Twitter, and it’s been ages since I watched cable TV, but I distinctly remember there being a fuck-ton of ads for gas stations. Some were advertising their detergents/etc, others there price/loyalty programs, and others advertising the attached convenience store. But there was no escaping how many ads there were for BP, Shell, and 7/11.

I don’t know if the ads in question are the same variety, or if they are trying something more devious, like trying to convince people not to switch to EVs.

This algorithmic driven ad system sucks. If I want something I look for it. That they think I have a mush brain that needs to be forced fed with nonsense and other undesirable rubbish is infuriating. Hence I have a strong desire to avoid it all.

The best algorithms of big tech are not even consistently good at basic things like delivering advertisements to a relevant audience.

I’ve written online about not owning or needing a car, without any attempt to hide my activity or even identity from advertisers. I still get ads for car products, like tyres. I’ve talked about being vegetarian and still get ads for meat-based fast food. I get ads for cat and dog food despite having neither of those pets. I get ads for child-related stuff despite not having kids.

I wonder if their targeting is as good as they say it is. It’s uncommon that an ad I see is for something I’d even want

I mean isn’t that the point of targeted advertising?

Next you’re gonna tell me companies selling feminine higene products are blocking male audiences from seeing ads? Boner pill advertisements blocked from women? Smirnoff is blocking children from seeing vodka ads?

    The horror!
