TW: Detransition mention, therapy mention, religion mention

I’ve been seeing my therapist for 6 years. He was instrumental in me figuring out my gender and sexuality. He helped me through my ruminations of “what if I’m not really trans? What if I transition and regret it?!”. He was a hardcore atheist, we’d talk about this often (shared point of interest).

My last session with him was last year. With illness and work busyness, I’ve not had time or capacity. I booked a session with him recently, only to find he had changed his name, and his pronouns to he/him (previously she/they). Before session he emailed me to say that he is detransitioning.

We had our session and everything was… Fine. Weird but fine. I didnt ask about the detrans thing because I had something I urgently needed to talk about.

Later, I check his website to find that all the resources he did have about the evils of conversion therapy are gone, all the queer support lines are gone, everything relating to trans stuff is gone. In its place? There’s a paragraph about him exploring his religion and how he can integrate that into his practice?!

I want to be very careful: people detransition for a variety of complicated reasons. I don’t want to be presumptuous. But… The removal of queer resources, the spirituality stuff and the lack of mention of anything queer on his page? Thats kinda whack.

The odd thing is, he still said a lot of trans affirming stuff in our appointment when it came up. But I’m so confused?! I may book another session to talk about how I feel. But also: if you’re trans, you know exactly how the above is gonna come across, why would you do it?

Chat, my brain is very fucked up over this. I couldn’t sleep last night. It’s such a mind fuck.

Thoughts?

What the other person said. Also it may be worthwhile exploring why that makes you uncomfortable with someone you’re comfortable exploring that with. Ideally what others do or don’t do with their body shouldn’t have such a pull on yourself, that is unless it’s literally affecting their work and behavior towards you in session, then yeah that would definitely be a problem.

If you can’t be completely comfortable around your therapist, then they cannot provide the service you need them to. If this is something that concerns you, talking about it seems like a good idea. If you still aren’t comfortable after speaking with them, I’d likely time to find a new therapist.
