Reading Wool by Hugh Howey and H.P Lovecraft complete story collection.
Started Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers, about the effects of prolonged stress, a few chapters in pretty good so far
About to finish The Night Circus. I can see why a set of my friends are obsessed.

I just finished Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. It was a fun read, interesting to read something that old and I really liked Austen’s sense of humor. I don’t think I will read another one of her books though, at least not soon, because the whole “oh my goodness, when can I see him again, he asked me to dance with him” schtick was too much for me.
And right after that I started Helm by Sarah Hall. I’m not far in yet, but it’s really interesting. It’s about a wind (the meteorological phenomenon, not flatulence) whose name is Helm.
The only problem is I have a serious cold at the moment, so I can’t read now. (This comment took me ten minutes to type in between sneezes.) I hope tomorrow’s better.
Struggling through the Adventures and Misdaventures of Maqroll - what a drag, feel like I’m reading the same episode over and over again.
Finished all of the BuyMort series. All in all I’d recommend it, great series. I did skip over some of the “ad” texts though, it was a bit too much at times. Still reading the latest dungeon crawler Carl book, but slowly. About 20% in, and haven’t decided if I like this one yet.
Finished The Player of Games by Iain M Banks the other day. Loved it and can’t wait to read more in the series!
I’m reading through You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat as part of the book club I’m in. To be honest I’m not enjoying it that much - the story is all over the place. But it’s fairly short, so I’ll push through and give some feedback during the next meeting.
Funny, I had the opposite reaction. I quit reading Banks after that book! I did appreciate the subplot with the companion bot, but Gurgeh was so unsympathetic that I really just couldn’t enjoy it.
That’s understandable- he’s not a particularly likeable character. From what I’ve heard, the other Culture books are more action packed if that’s something you’d prefer . I’ve got Use of Weapons to try next, which I’ve heard is very good.
Another person had also told me that the series picks up a bit after this one. I’m planning to request Use of Weapons from the library at some point (not this month, I’ve got too many books checked out right now). Here’s hoping I like the next one more!
I’m currently reading Consider Plhebas and am almost done! I am liking it and am excited for more in the series — no doubt there will be Damage in The Player of Games
I actually haven’t read that yet (some people online suggested skipping it). But maybe I’ll give it a go if you’d recommend it!
I think the intro to the universe is interesting — I especially love how they introduce the main character. It definitely makes me want to read more
I really liked most of the series, but I didn’t finish three of the later ones. That’s up to my preferences, for example I didn’t like Dune or Children of Time.

I recently read Dune Messiah and want to read the rest of the series. I started Children of Dune but paused to start the culture series.
What series of books do you like that you’ve finished?
Well, I read a lot, I guess more than one book a week on average. Series I liked, recent sci-fi: the Bobiverse by Denis E. Taylor, old man’s war by John Scalzi, murderbot by Martha Wells (too bad it’s mostly novella’s) and John Scalzi’s Interdependency trilogy. Older sci-fi: Foundation series by Asimov, Lazarus Long books by Heinlein and Stainless steel rat by Harry Harrison. Basically stuff where the sci doesn’t get in the way of the fi.
I actually just read book 1 of Murderbot — I liked it and will read more. I liked the ending. John Scalzi has been on my list. I read Foundation and liked it — I def want to read more books in that series as well. Of the others you mentioned, which would you recommend the most?
I would recommend the Bobiverse first, old man’s war second.
“Cibola Burn” by James S.A. Corey, so The Expanse #4. I like the TV series a lot (watched first, before reading the books), I really liked “Leviathan Wakes” and “The Butcher of Anderson Station”, but the second and third volumes were meh. The second one is too similar to the first one and the third one, I don’t know, just didn’t click. “Cibola Burn” is good, finally the themes have changed, the setting has changed (Ilus) and there are new mysteries to uncover (well, I watched the TV series, so the story is kinda spoiled for me, but it’s not like I remember everything).
Loved every one of the Expanse books, but could not get into the new series by the same authors. I’m hoping that they do a third series of something that maybe I’ll like.
It’s also stupid that Amazon or someone else hasn’t gotten the gang back together to film the final two books. I guess they’re too busy spending all their money on Wheel Of Time and Lord Of The Rings.
I’m reading Horror Stories Shocking Tales of Unspeakable Terror, a collection of old gothic horror stories, they’re compelling but there’s a severe lack of diversity, I’m over halfway through and they’ve already spent the big hitters of Stoker, Poe and Shelley.
I’m currently binging Ich möchte zurückgehen in der Zeit by Judith Hermann. As it’s been just released it’s only available in German yet, but if you’re able to read that I highly recommend. It’s about Judith’s own journey towards discovering the story of her grandfather and the traces this man, who was a convinced Nazi, has left in the family. The horrible shadow that drags way into the third generation, that no one seems to want to acknowledge.
