Orban’s strategy was stealing EU money for himself and his cronies. The EU largely stopped funding Hungary, so the money dried up and he has no reason to cling to power that hard.
Just a couple of examples for anyone who wants to see some. A $200 million dollar soccer field in his home village of 2000 people, which included a $3 million, EU funded train that goes 3 miles from the village to another one that just so happens to have one of his family palaces. Orban got EU funding for that train by promising it would have 2000 riders/day. Instead, in its first year, it had less than 2000 riders, total. Yes, ijstead of 730,000 riders/yr, it was 2000 riders/yr. It now just runs on weekends.
Also, apprently all highway work in the country is done though subcontractors that all buy stone from Orbans fathers stone mine at markes up prices.
