Like many languages, languages of the Bible like Hebrew and Greek have grammatical genders. The aspect of God that smites things is grammatically male. The aspect of God that conveys spiritual strength - usually translated as “the Holy Spirit” - is grammatically female. Progressive movements of Protestantism and Judaism see God as both genders: one of the two creation stories in Genesis states God created man AND woman in God’s image. The focus on the male aspect of God, and the second creation story in Genesis with the rib thing, is a conservative movement hang-up and not a general religion thing.
