I think shrapnelling like that is actually very hard to do at scale. You have to have a zillion big mortar guns dotted everywhere along possible flight routes, you have to protect the big guns from being blown up themselves because they’re easy juicy targets, you have to calculate specific trajectories every time you take a shot, you have to take multiple shots to have a reasonable chance of hitting it, but each shot requires like 10 seconds to reload after which the drone is now very far away, you have to be able to consistently deliver large stockpiles of ammunition to every gun on the front lines and elsewhere, and more.
But with net-deploying drones, the drone can just fly into the general area of the incoming projectile’s flightpath and hold up a big like 10x10 meter net that the incoming projectile has no chance of avoiding
