How are update schedules on gog these days? it seems like when I purchased in the past and had the same game on both steam and gog that the steam versions always got updated first.
If it’s not open-source I’m not interested.

GOG is a platform for selling closed source software. If the client was open source, would you be willing to use it to buy and run closed source games? If so, why are the requirements for the client different from the games?
There are open-source third-party clients already (at least for downloading/installing games). I don’t see why I would want to downgrade to a proprietary app. That being said, I download games via the website, so I’m probably not the target audience anyway.
It’s probably interesting news for people already using Steam, since they’ve already made the concession to closed source software by using it, but youre right they its highly unlikely to be open source, especially since the Windows client isn’t and the fact they’d be shouting it from the rooftops if it were.

Nice, one of the main reasons I buy a lot of stuff on Steam is because it’s easy to use with Linux distros.

See, all it took was removing CDPR from the picture. As soon as squeezing maximum possible profits stopped being the only priority, development of a Linux client began.
They have said this before, I will believe it when I see it.
I’d love a storefront API so I could use whatever client I want that meets the spec. At least I could know then what information is being exchanged.
They confirmed they started working on it in 2014.
Without a percentage of how much they’ve accomplished in the last 12 years, it’s hard to judge if they’re still just 12 more years away, or 36 more years away…

They have a Windows app. How hard can it be to convert it to work on linux?

Umu-Launcher could be used which would have the same compatibility as Steam.
