There are 193 UN recognised countries, two UN observer states (the Vatican and the Palestinian Authority), and plenty of partially recognised or disputed countries. But what if there was more?
Leaving aside factors like natural resources, stability, population, etc., what countries do you want to exist, simply because it would be pretty neat? Joke answers are acceptable and encouraged.
Cascadia would be interesting. Washington, Oregon, California, maybe British Columbia too.
Oh how I wish
Siberia. Or, perhaps, a loose federation of states based on North Asian indigenous peoples. Ukraine had been lucky enough to get out of the russian empire eventually, but they’re still stuck in there.
Listenbourg and James
A better question IMHO is who do you think should have a monopoly on the use of force.
…what? This question was mainly focusing on fantasy and goofy hahas.
Nothing about the government, military, politics, etc., there are plenty of other places to discuss that.
Xanth
But Florida is already wacky enough.
First nations, and any pre-colonization civilizations that were erased. Make people have to get paperwork for the entire venn diagram of nations depending on where they live.
Vatican yes. Then Kosovo.
And I want Cyprus, Ireland, Korea united again. We in Germany had that luck. Others should also get the chance.
North Africa. We have South Africa as a country, but not North Africa.
Agreed. Same for South Macedonia, Western Timor, and Arctica.
I’ll add Côte d’Noir and Old Zealand
I would love it if the USA Balkanized
Cascadia!!!
I wouldn’t, I don’t wanna be stuck in Führer DeSantis’ Floridian Reich💀
You should move, climate wise Florida isn’t long for this world :(
If I could afford to, I already would have
I really hope blue states offer some kind of relocation assistance for climate refugees soon. I imagine it’s hard with Trump withholding all federal money.
I keep hoping somewhere will start to recognize people fleeing the US as refugees…
This would be lovely. And Canada. Freedom for Quebec.
I think the world would be a lot better off without humanity.
None.
As for me, I would like a republic governed by the penguins in Antarctica, because penguins are pretty cool! And maybe we can give the different aquatic species sovereignty over the ocean, because that would make international trade a lot more interesting.
As for countries run by humans, I would chop South Africa in half so we can create North Africa, it feels a bit mismatched otherwise. And all the little British and French bits scattered around the world should be independent, we would get a lot of extra countries! Except French Guiana, so we can still say that the longest land border of the French is with Brazil. At the very least, only the bits that don’t touch Brazil can become independent (win-win situation in my opinion).
Quebec can do its own thing, and maybe some of the United States could become less united. There’s not enough countries in continental North America. You could do the same with Brazil and Argentina too for South America, imagine, we could have so many more Guays along with Paraguay and Uruguay, maybe enough to complete the alphabet! Siberian Russia can be broken up, because it bothers me that there are many countries in Central, South, and East Asia, but only Russia in the North.
I don’t think any country needs to exist. We could have a government like The Federation in star trek where the entire Earth is the “country,” if we didn’t have hate and distrust of others and could actually share the planet equally.
World without borders, is the world without escape. Now we have different jurisdictions, which limits the reaches of power of governments. You can move to a country with less oppressive laws, or at least get news from there. Different jurisdictions makes things like TOR and VPN work for censorship circumvention and privacy.
Besides earth federation would subvert any diversity we as humanity have. I would prefer more small countries gaining sovereignty than big empires(federations) growing. Power should be decentralized, not the opposite.
Besides earth federation would subvert any diversity we as humanity have.
You can have political / economic union but cultural diversity. In fact you can even have political and legal diversity among the subdivisions. There already are a bunch of countries that work like this, such as Malaysia, Nigeria and Belgium.
Only matters because of corruption and bad actors. Like I said, that kind of world would require a huge change to human nature itself to work. Whether it’s 1 global government, or full anarchy.
Except in the current disorganized world we always just end up with one or two superpowers bullying the little governments and crushing all kinds of diversity anyway.
Also,
You can move to a country with less oppressive laws
That might work for the crafty and well-resourced individual who has a go bag and good OpSec and can actually hop borders and keep their heads down, but that sort of thing is nearly impossible for, like, a single parent working for a crap hourly wage, or an unhoused person dealing with an extended mental health crisis, or other more vulnerable people. Justice shouldn’t depend on geography.
Think about how it would be if the president was like current POTUS.
It won’t get better until we at least have the same laws for all people. It shouldn’t be an incentive to move production overseas just because those countries don’t have minimum wage and uses children for labour. All people should get the same minimum care all over the globe.
That’s fair enough, nationalism has been the cause of both world wars, as well as most conflicts around the world.
Let me rephrase the question, which countries do you want to exist? Post has been edited to clarify
Well, I am a hard anarchist; I don’t think any countries or borders should exist. But I am also a realist, and don’t believe an anarchist utopia is really possible. Not without global human enlightenment, anyway.
frankly I think if everyone on the planet over a certain age took a heroic dose of mushrooms, just once, we could get about 90% of the way to global human enlightenment. A little ego death, as a treat.
Unfortunately, with the draconian laws against psychedelics (how dare you try and escape this reality when we’ve made it so pleasant!), this will almost certainly never come to pass.
Crimean Khanate: I want a horde-nation in modern times, and I want it in Crimea.
Rojava: Is already a progressive, socialist, Kurdish, secular government with high anarchist influence in middle-east, imagine if they had rest of Kurdistan and independence.
Transylvania
1, 2, 3, ah ah ah

Although there are legitimate reasons for it not to be, I do want Quebec to be it’s own country because of how unique the culture is.
