My husband, son, and I have been locked up for months—despite being permanent residents with no criminal record. It is an unendurable, unending nightmare.
For more information, either visit the article directly or view the post with quotes in !crimes_of_ice@lemmy.4d2.org
That’s the America you people voted for, hope you’re proud fucking assholes
despite being permanent residents with no criminal record.
Ah, see? That’s where you are wrong. You do have criminal records. You are the wrong type of immigrant: the non-billionaire brown-ish one.
What has happened to us was designed specifically to break our body and spirit.
Yeah, that’s the idea. They torture you until you self deport
But even when we decided to make the difficult decision to ask to be allowed to voluntarily leave the United States—the place we consider our country and our home—the government not only opposed it but suggested that it would appeal any judicial decisions that grant us departure.
Wait, what.
I thought the idea was to use the concentration camps to torture people until they voluntarily self deport. What’s going on here?
Even when people do manage to self-deport, ICE still goes after them to collect $998 for each day they spent in the U.S. illegally.
Turns out, for-profit concentration camps want to keep getting paid.
It’s easy to blame capitalism and greed, but I think that’s an insufficient explanation. This is genocidal behavior, from the bottom rung to the top. Profit is a cherry on top; these people want power, real physical power to prey on people without consequences.
We can blame multiple things. But I think we have to remember that capitalism and greed has been the leading cause or excuse of this behavior for most of human history.
Hitler became wealthy beyond his wildest dreams.
The slave trade was extremely lucrative for the Dutch east India company.
Most empires in history traded humans they conquered as commodities.
This is to say, the point isnt only just cruelty.
I think the more abstract power concept is also very much the point, but it might be harder for some people to grasp. It is hard to quantify power, but easy to quantify money. And money is traded for power in our society.
I have struggled to understand how this can happen to people who have never broken the law, in a system I believed to be based on the rule of law.
Oh C’mon
The law says you can’t drive too fast or too slow. It says you can’t drive too reckless or too careful. The laws are designed so that you break them every day, to empower police to oppress you legally. And, more important, there are laws that must be broken to progress society towards equality.
You discredit yourself and everything else you say by suggesting that you’ve never broken a law
My husband, Eissa Hashemi, is also a professor, and has dedicated his life to mentoring PhD students in the Business Psychology department of The Chicago School
Uhh, is that what I think that is?
Please tell me that’s not what I think that is
What do you think it is?
I don’t understand how half the country can be ok with this kind of stuff happening
Most Germans were okay with the nazis until it was clear they’re losing the war.
They don’t believe it’s happening. Or they believe that ICE wouldn’t target someone for no reason, so they must be hiding something.
MAGA aren’t the brightest.
I genuinely wonder what % are aware of it.
There is zero excuse to not be, but I’m still curious.
They are okay with it until they come for them.
That’s factually inaccurate. It’s less than 30%
But the other isn’t doing shit about it, they’re just as bad and to blame
It’s a size issue. If a groundswell of citizens in e.g. New Zealand wanted to overthrow their government, they could try. In the US, it would take insane numbers and a lot more logistical support than is generally realistic.
Yes, that’s indeed factually inaccurate. 30% voted actively for this, another 30% decided they didn’t care enough about this to vote against so decided they were ok with whatever the results of the elections, so it’s actually around 60%.
“They didn’t oppose X, therefore they accepted X, therefore they supported X.”
An argument from silence combined with false equivalence (or invalid inference) does get you -fallaciously! - from non-opposition to support.
“She didn’t say no. I didn’t rape her. She wanted it! She begged for it.”
The reality is far more complex than a straight extrapolation of broad attitudes from an election. Elections have so many more situational factors (not to mention the effects of propaganda and corporate media, and a complicit duopoly limiting voter expression, suppressed turnout, etc).
If you want to know broad opinions, look at opinion polls, not to get too crazy but try it! ICE was citing some 2024 polls in support of their genocidal aims, but polls now show only 3 in 10 adults approve of ICE actions - and I personally assume those 3 include a not insignificant number of people who have avoided a frank look at the reality of what’s happening and only get their updates from right wing media.
The actual number of Americans who support this evil with open eyes are probably much lower than 30-40%, if we’re being at all charitable with our guesswork and interpretations. The scarier truth of that is how few true believers it takes for a committed propaganda campaign to subvert the will of the general populace.
I’d personally distinguish “support” from “indifference, ignorance, resignation, partisan loyalty, and prioritization of other issues.” That’s actually central to your argument. If 30% approve of something, that doesn’t mean 30% are committed ideological supporters willing to defend every aspect of it. Political polling is not a census of people’s souls.
Links to the specific polls vaguely referenced would also be helpful.
That was messy of me not to include those, I’ll do better next time.
This is why well regulated militias are supposed to exist, to enforce constitutional rights where the tRumpSSreich nazis are undercutting and eroding them. Idefinite imprisonment without trial? Citizenship means nothing? Immigrants deserve humanity; the current process is inhumane and to avoid it, the enforcers of idiotic half-policy MUST be brought to account at the time of infraction - ‘qualified immunity’ extends to citizens halting the abuse of the ‘qualified immunity’ of “officials” or qualified immunity is a load of manure and needs immediate burial
Fuck, this was heartbreaking to read.
