But it’s definitely a thing that exists. I, unfortunately, got one as a birthday present once, way back when. Used it maybe once or twice, then went back to a normal slide gauge and haven’t touched it since.
Consistency. You can take 3 readings in a row with that stick and get 3 wildly different results. I have a $20 digital one from decades ago that gives me the same reading within 5kPa on each try.
