The black hills were also stolen without any treaty agreement or compensation. Even the US Supreme Court agreed it was stolen, but rather than returning the land, they offered a payout. This money was rejected by the tribe and sits collecting interest to this day while they continue to demand the return of the land.
My middle school history teacher taught us about it back in the early 90s.
He was the type of person who didn’t really give a shit about “approved” curriculum and just gave it to us straight.
We learned about it in our history class in the 00’s, and it’s literally the story told at the Rushmore Monument, it’s not like anybody is hiding the truth. I’m not saying that the public school approved curriculum for history classes is perfect, or even good. But I swear half the people that say “we never learned this!” just didn’t pay attention in class.
