New unions rely on social organizing: which is rarer than even a few decades ago.
The decline of participation in city/county politics, the decline of unions, fewer people in churches, bars and parks: all of these happened at the same time. There is something lacking in most of the social structure inside the USA today; but that sense of local community was very strong even through the 1960s.
It makes total sense that the majority of people want unions, but many struggle to improve that.

When you can’t pass any laws to protect the workers you really have no other choice.
The comment hits the nail of the head. Most politicians no matter the party hate to support unions with actual legislation. They will talk a great game but in reality they will always side with big business.
