While I whole heartedly agree with Mackelmore’s message, Ed has been pretty direct about wanting to keep things apolitical. Knowing that, Mackelmore decided to use his set as a platform which is very disrespectful.
If he had been opening for RATM, my opinion would be much different.
People aren’t there to hear what you have to say about global politics. They’re there to enjoy a performance, not to be reminded about all of the horrible shit going on.
If he wants to start a “Free Palestine” tour, I 1000% support that, although I won’t go because politics doesn’t need to be shoved into literally every facet of life.
Pointing out a genocide isn’t the same as going up on stage and arguing about policy. Everyone should feel very uncomfortable about what is going on in Gaza.
So you believe genocide talk has a special place and time to talk about it… Yeah you’re exactly what I’ve come to expect.
Upvote for unpopular, because that’s what you’re supposed to do in this sub!

Did Sheeran explain in explicit detail a ‘no-politics’ rule for the tour, because it sounds like that’s what he should have done. Macky’s farewell message made it sound like that wasn’t the case, anyway.

Oh yes they are. Or at least, they should know how the game works.
Many, many acts share bits of their lives, their opinions, stories and whatnot between songs that it’s pretty much common as dirt. If you know the artist in a general sense, then you’d even expect certain things from them. That kind of thing dates back to the sixties, or maybe even earlier. (like Lenny Bruce or George Carlin in standup)

That would depend on the artist I guess. The last concert I visited was extremely politically charged.

*ongoing genocide
Counterpoint: Everything is politics. The stage you’re on, the music you play, the people attending, all 100% driven by political decisions and results. Some of it is obvious (usually things that are politically divisive), others less so - no one objects to a message like “support the troops”, despite it being 100% political. There’s no such thing as something being apolitical; just avoiding controversial politics.
