I knew I’d hear this take. And I don’t buy it, in fact I think its very ignorant. No effort post with links this time since its been discussed to death. Iran’s current regime has been incredibly belligerent since they overthrow the Shah in 1979 with the help of communists, and seized total power by then killing all of the communists. In the 45 years since they’ve been shouting “death to america” and after two straight generations of this, only now are at they having the war with america their grandparents wanted. Maybe great great great grandparents since they marry 9 year old girls. That’s one of the “rights” they started a civil war for.

Plus they get in lots of smaller conflicts with their neighbors and they killed tens of thousands of civilians last time they had big protests (the equivalent of just pulling out an artillery regiment on BLM).

This is a military government which uses conflicts to stay in power and always needs a conflict.

The middle east has a terrorist state doing a war of extermination in Gaza and is not afraid of committing genocides in many other middle east countries called Israel financed by America so it expand it’s territory . You expect them to not spend heavily on missiles? I am pretty sure the sanctions on Iran affect the population a lot more than armament spending .

Nobody is going to start a war with the united states because of Nukes so there is zero excuses to invest that much on the army instead of improving people lives with things like universal health care

Also the 30k protesters killed in 2 days is bullshit, only idiots believe it because 15k is the number of jews killed daily in Nazi Germany and it took years of preparation for logisticss and camp building to do so

Sure, the Irani regime absolutely deserves anything coming to them. But the US is the one that killed 110+ little girls in an opening strike during an illegal war.

It would be fantastic to eliminate that 50+ year history and beyond that’s gotten us to this point, but you have to admit, cutting their military funding at this point would be suicidal.

And, the point of the OP demonstrating the hypocrisy while America continues to greenlight the largest military budgets in history still stands, even if it’s a smaller overall percentage of GDP.

If the US military kept their targets to military objectives instead of blowing up schools and medical research facilities (though of course the war would still be entirely illegal) I don’t think they wouldn’t be seeing nearly so much opposition. Not to mention the destruction of infrastructure the whole modern world is reliant on.

      Edit:

Actually, on reflection I think budget is the wrong word. We’ve seen modern defensive wars fought extremely economically via drones and guerrilla tactics, so maybe that’s not the right take on my end. However, I don’t believe they’d be able to exert the same control over the region without some investment.

Not to mention, all the money invested in those medical science institutes isn’t exactly a great return on investment after today.
