Kemi Badenoch says those earning more than £100,000 should not be discouraged from working more

Take from the poor and give to the rich, I guess?

Sure, that’s the thing to concentrate on right now - giving high earners more money.

It should still be means tested but switched to means testing household income rather than individual income.

It has always massively pissed me off that you could have a couple each earning just under the threshold qualifying for the full amount and a single earner just over the end of the taper getting nothing, yet the net income for the couple is considerably higher not least because of two vs one tax free allowance and two lots of 20%.

This was also posted in a different irrelevant community that I commented on, so I’ll paste the comment here too:

It sounds dumb, but there are plenty of people who I work with who cut back work hours to stay under 100k. They say the marginal tax rate on earning above 100k plus the loss of free childcare (which is 1000s of £) means you actually lose money. The rich shouldn’t be given more money, but the benefits should decline linearly rather than drop off a cliff edge.

The insane part is that 2 spouses earning 90k each are much much better off than one earning 180k. The whole tax system can be pretty regressive in some ways.

There will be those who say “Well that seems fair”, and if all childcare was free at point of delivery like the NHS is (or should be - looking at you dentists… and squinting at you opticians) they might have a point. But the tories are not the ones who are going to do that, or at least not do it anywhere near right!

I think it’s possible the next government could be a Reform/Tory coalition. I don’t want that to happen, but I think it’s possible.

I think we’ve been lucky to see Labour rise in the polls. This makes a progressive general election win more likely. Possibly a Labour/LibDem/SNP coalition. Possibly with Greens. The polls are in flux, it seems.

I wouldn’t rule out a Reform/Tory government though. Hope for the best but expect the worst.

They are right for the wrong reason. Any social policy that’s not universal will always be at risk and lower quality.
