I saw a quote from a group that tracks a lot of the suckers saying there was a very large drop in sppecifically botnet activity from Russia, but not because Yandex was hosting a hive directly rather as a momentary disruption of infrastructure such as banks and internet gateways.

Still, they’re a relatively small portion of the pie. Gotta celebrate small victories, though.

yeah, bots are rarely from one location. they are modular and use components from pre-existant infrastructure, like hacked routers or phones of unsuspecting victims, DNS, darknet and regular website hosting as control network or payload hosting. destroying a datacenter can affect parts of that and sever the connection between the controller and the end points, but both sides will usually try to reconnect.

if glorious Ukraine will keep hitting them tho, their attempts to reconnect will be futile and the russian invaders may be left without any internet connection at all.

Which has nothing to do with the subthread of a fucking idiot suggesting we destroy all datacenters. Which would mean Lemmy and the rest of the internet. I really fucking hate when people can’t fucking keep up with the subject.

For anyone who wishes all datacenters destroyed, stop using the internet and fuck off and you can figure out what that would be like. No internet for you. That’s what you’re supporting.

I do, but I also see how it affects local smaller shops, so I’ve started to reduce it despite often costing me more

For me, the shipping costs make it actually more expensive to shop online (when it’s “free” they are just pre-mixed into the price of the goods), but no way I’m hauling that stuff I usually order home by myself.

For me it’s usually either because I’m feeling lazy or because it’s something very specialised that’s hard to source locally

For example I wanted a new cycling helmet, and the only satisfactory helmet I found in local shop was ~200eur. I could have ordered online instead and found something in sale for maybe 100eur instead, if I just waited for a week for delivery
