I think one of the biggest issues is that nothing is real anymore. 90% of what 90% of us do is utterly meaningless. For the average person, life is entirely solved. Our problems are mostly by choice, be it ours or someone else’s. The only real things in our lives are tragedies that we’d never have been able to prevent or resolve anyway.

An apocalypse is enticing because then our actions would have direct consequences. Right now, the consequences of our actions are filtered and diffused through a trillion layers of bullshit where the positive and negative effects are basically invisible unless you make a ridiculous amount of money very quickly, or like, kill someone with your car.

      It’s always the same

The fact that plenty of them, most famously that poster-boy for 'Murican shit Henry Ford was a huge fan of Hitler and his bullshit gets glossed over

They sat out the war until they were pushed

And it will happen again and again, even when the problem is in their own house

Watch for when Zombie/apocalypse movies start getting popular again.

It’s absolutely a sign of mass despair at “the system”.

Zombies make everyone equal again. The executive actually becomes dead weight compared to folks who have spent their lives doing physical or practical labour.

I had a serious injury that meant staying in bed most of the day for a couple of years. It sucked hard, and I did none of my hobbies, just watched all of Netflix.

I’m mostly better now and am able to go to my job which also sucks.

I think it’s simply that modern life is too far removed from what our instincts evolved to handle… A shitty life or death situation is something we’re more equipped to handle (at least in our imagination) than societal problems so big that are effectively impossible for us to influence.

I guess a possible part of the solution could be breaking these problems down into manageable chunks?

“Think globally, act locally”, as they say… and “locally” doesn’t have to be a physical locale. It can be a fedi instance or a niche group of some kind.

Sure, we do all sorts of things to function in modern society, doesn’t necessarily make it easy, or make escapism less attractive

Being hit by a motor vehicle of some sort owned by a large company with deep pockets and suffering a horrific but ultimately temporary injury with absolutely no longer-term health effects that nonetheless results in a seven figure injury settlement

Covid time was personally great for me. Vietnam locked things down. We had food delivered. We didn’t get sick. At home with the wife and kid. Watching movies and tv. Playing games. Making the second kid. I worked from home for something like 6 to 9 months because my office is in a neighboring province and VN didn’t allow travel between provinces until a later relaxing of restrictions after vaccines became available.

I loved Covid, like not the disease or people dying. But the rise in WFH. My company finally wants to cease all WFH and it fucking sucks. I’m ready for another pandemic.

I can’t really do offices, I burn out way too fast. It’s not my kind of environment. Covid let me be a functional member of society, it gave me a taste of normalcy. Now all that is being taken away because middle-management needs to justify expensive offices. Offices that also drive up property costs so no one can afford homes.

      Yay~!
