there was virtually no security at the hotel?

Were we looking at the same event?

The hallways were full of uniformed Secret Service agents and there were several plain clothes/undercover agents in many of the initial images.

There were also many uniformed local police (one took a round in their bodyarmor).

There were magnetometers for screening guests.

There was a fully kitted counter assault squad standing by close enough to be on stage in about 10 seconds.

The airspace was restricted and there were agents on the roof with counter drone weapons.

There were multiple layers of security.

All he managed to do was to sprint through an initial screening point and right into a hallway full of federal agents and local police where he was subdued.

Apparently you could get into the hotel with just a paper ticket. That’s what I was talking about.

(I don’t actually believe it was staged)

Yeah, while it was closed to the general public for security reasons. Existing guests were given a pass to get through the perimeter security.

The event space was the primary security area and he was tackled before getting passed the entrance security.

Since this was a place where the President’s was prescence was planned, the security would be especially heavy. (If bad guys know where you’re going to be they can plan more larger, more complex attacks.)

The security would have been set up, covertly, to repel the equivalent of a ground assault. They’d have an ground quick reaction force nearby, the air space was restricted so there were likely drones or worse overhead.

Trump is incompetent, but the Secret Service isn’t (insert jokes about the sniper here) and they have basically infinite money as far as bodyguards go.

This guy didn’t get remotely close, at best the agents saved his life by tackling him before he got far enough for them to use lethal force.

He was able to get close enough that Wolf Blitzer was standing close by to where it happened. That’s awfully close.

A member of the press was in the hallway at a dinner for members of the press. That doesn’t give any information about how close he was other than telling us he was in the right building.

That’s true but if he was in the building, he also could have detonated a bomb and that’s pretty close for that.
