I know the number 40 turns up a lot in the bible. The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days and nights, probably others I’m forgetting. I think it’s a cultural shorthand for “a lot”, similar to how in American English “a million” or “a zillion” might be used.
