I have solved that by giving the distant machine the credentials to connect to the local machine. And the distant machine can’t be accessed from the outside.

I self host mine and it works. It is quite hard to set up at first but once you have configured it correctly it is satisfying.

If you’re privacy conscious, then UnifiedPush is a good alternative to Google’s solution for push notifications.
