  • The Pentagon already threatened it mafia-style.

“In January, behind closed doors at the Pentagon, Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre — Pope Leo XIV’s then-ambassador to the United States — and delivered a lecture,” said Hale.

“America has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world,” Colby and his associates informed the cardinal. “The Catholic Church had better take its side.”

As the room temperature grew, Hale said he confirmed that one U.S. official “reached for a fourteenth-century weapon and invoked the Avignon Papacy, the period when the French Crown used military force to bend the bishop of Rome to its will.”

During the period in question, there were two Popes. One in the Vatican, and one in Avignon. I’m fairly certain that if the Vatican doesn’t bend to Trump’s will, there will soon be a Church of America with it’s own Pope.

  • Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated France from the Nazis? Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated Holocaust camps and liberated those, those innocent people, you know, those who had survived the Holocaust?

What a silly question. It’s silly because it’s based on the idea that God is a being who would pick sides in the first place. It is generally commonly thought by believers that we are all God’s children. When your children get in a fight do you pick sides and cheer for one of them to kick the other’s ass? I would hope not. I would hope that, as a parent, you would step in and try and stop the fight.

Assuming there is a God, I would hope he/she/it would just be terribly disappointed in all the children involved for not finding a way to settle their differences peacefully.

  • I think we’re hovering around The Running Man, with a game show host running things and using blood sports to keep the masses distracted; but we are certainly working hard to get to Soylent Green. Once we finish destroying the environment, agriculture fails, and we have to turn cannibal to survive.

  • OP’s headline does not match the article linked in any way. I don’t know if the site changed the article or what, but the Grand Jury has not ordered Reddit to turn over any data.

a subpoena issued by federal prosecutors to the management of Reddit, representatives of the site have been ordered to appear before a grand jury in Washington D.C., with an April 14 deadline set in an attempt to compel Reddit to volunteer personal data and the identity of a user who had the temerity to lightly criticize Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the platform.

Essentially, they have ordered Reddit to send representatives to be badgered into volunteering the user’s information.

  • The 25th would never even get to Congress. Everyone in a position to invoke it is a Trump toady who wants him right where he is.

    25th Amendment, Section 4

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

  • Can second this comment regarding Linux Mint. Many years ago I tried switching to Linux (Ubuntu, I think, back around 2008) but I lacked the knowledge and skills to make it work. Three or four months ago I decided to try again and downloaded Mint and installed it. I’ve been reading that gaming on Linux had gotten worlds better lately.

I decided to just dip my toes first and set it up to dual boot, in case I chose to go back to Windows. I had very few problems with the installation and operation. Nothing that took more than a quick google search to solve. Since then it’s been not unlike using Windows.

And yes, gaming seems to work pretty flawlessly too. I installed Steam and have had few issues with running any of the games I’ve tried.

  • Tracking calories accurately is a balance between good data and time investment.

Absolutely true, and getting good data is really, really hard. In fact, the nutritional content on food labels (in the USA) is allowed to be over by as much as 20% by the FDA.

In addition to that the processes and formulas used to calculate those numbers are also far from precise .

The most accurate method to measure energy and calories in food is called a bomb calorimeter, Li said. The process works on the theory that when one thing releases heat — in this case, food — it’s absorbed by another, in this case whoever is digesting that food, as energy.

To make this calculation, food scientists seal a piece of food in a pressurized, oxygen-filled steel container — the “bomb.” That container is encased in an insulated box filled with water.

The scientists light the food on fire and let it burn completely. Then, they take the temperature of the water. They use an equation to tell them how much energy — and therefore calories — are in that piece of food, based on how much the burning piece of food raised the temperature of the water surrounding it.

However, this is only an estimate because not everything that burns and releases energy to heat the water can be digested by a person eating it. Fiber, for example, burns in the calorimeter but will just pass through your digestive system without giving up its energy.

Many food companies don’t even test food like this. They simply estimate the calorie content based on the number of grams of fat, carbs, and proteins in the food. Still, unless and until someone comes up with a better way to determine the calories in a given measure of food, it’s the best system we’ve got.

  • Idiocracy is really not a good metaphor for current times. In Idiocracy, the president went looking for a solution by finding the actual smartest person that they could find. That is kind of the opposite of the Trump administration. Frankly, as movies go, I think the Running Man might be a little closer. A TV show host with insane levels of power in government, including having the justice department under his thumb, using violent entertainment to keep the masses distracted from the fascist horrors going on around them matches fairly well with modern America.
