  • We were pretty well integrated with the USA over the last 30-odd years, to our mutual benefit and detriment. For the last 10 we’ve seen the vocal minority of Maple MAGA say with Maxime Bernier’s People Party, but also the Conservative moment aligning itself (if not merging with) MAGA.

Under the Trudeau government, his government’s foreign affairs philosophy was internationalism. Which generally made Canadians not really attached to their national identity, and our national symbols started to represent some of the colonial skeletons we were in the process of digging up. What made things worse is that the Ottawa Trucker Convoy was awash with Canadian symbols but they were a MAGA-coup-turned-nuisance-occupation. Most Canadians were either disappointed or disgusted at what national pride had come to represent the worst of us.

Though since Trump has been threatening Canada a lot, I think things have turned for the better, and non-MAGA people at-large have taken back the mantle of nationalism to decouple it from racism and bigotry. The !buyCanadian@lemmy.ca and !boycottUS@lemmy.ca movements are still active. I’ve not completely gotten rid of every American thing yet but like for 90% of stuff I have, and I actively look for alternatives every time before I buy, and discovered Canadian small to medium businesses I never would have come across otherwise.

  • I mean the industrial barriers to developing new nuclear energy are (AFAICT) similar to the industrial barriers to developing the production and Euro-sovereign supply chain for new battery solar and wind generation. Happy to be shown differently if you can point to me some differences that would have nuclear development require fewer physical resources, time or money.

I think some development in Small Modular Reactor tech is promising. Any in-progress or in-operation nuclear should stay the course. But if there was one technology we could choose to either ride fully into or vastly increase development alongside nuclear and other energy sources, the drastic cut in costs for renewables with battery storage seem to me like the silver bullet to the climate crisis everyone was waiting for, we just need our governments to pursue it NOW. In Italy’s particular case, tidal energy seems very suitable due to its massive coast relative to land size.

  • I mean, I can’t blame the posters right now since a non-credible leader has provoked a non-credible war last month.

There have been plenty of posts making of fun of Russia since they started their three day special military operation in Ukraine which will be done any year now. America and Israel’s war on Iran is just the hot new thing with plenty of armchair takes abound, even directly from the government supposedly in charge of this.
