Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It feels like a trap to send your only proof of citizenship to the government to get a passport (USA)... like you'd have no real physical document to prove your citizenship during those few weeks...English
0·16 hours agoI’ve always had multiple copies of my birth certificate. If I’d only had one, I’d have gotten a copy before sending it in with my passport application.

News@lemmy.world•Grok tells researchers pretending to be delusional ‘drive an iron nail through the mirror while reciting Psalm 91 backwards’English
0·23 hours agoYeah, but that might make them less reliant on AI! Just where are your priorities, anyway? One might think you don’t agree that more capital is the only goal worth pursuing…
That’s why your therapist said to try. So often people think they’re only trying if they’re succeeding. Just being at the party is a hell of a lot better for gaining social experience than being at home. You’ll fail countless times before you succeed, but it gets easier and easier the longer you do it. Trying just means not giving up, so good on you for continuing.
Yeah, that’s the point. Push away the scientists to make people dumber, then take advantage of that stupidity by blaming everything on another country to make people more xenophobic. Rinse and repeat until you’ve got a nice, malleable population that won’t put up a fuss when you start another war to get more kickbacks from the defense contractors.
My cat’s certainly was. Switching to wet food with extra water mixed in cleared it up nicely.
I pet my cat’s belly kinda like this, though I never grab the scruff. They’ll scratch and bite you, sure, but it’s never hard enough to actually be dangerous; they understand that it’s play time. You just get used to having a few small scrapes on your arm most of the time.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your thoughts on someone who has a mental age of 22 at 32 and hangs out with people in their 20's? is that creepy/predatory?English
0·3 days agoBy the time you’re in your mid 20’s you stop caring about how old people are. I hang out with older and younger people alike; who they are as a person is far more important than when they were born. I stopped keeping track of my own age by my late 20’s, and now I have to do quick mental math every time someone asks me how old I am.
Now, I don’t have a weird condition that makes my mental age the equivalent of someone in their 20’s, but I imagine that someone who did would have all the more reason to want to hang out with similar-minded people. The real question that should be asked is why do you think it makes so much of a difference when everyone is well into adulthood, even by self-proclaimed mental age?

World News@lemmy.world•$2 Billion Per Day Spent by US on Iran War Could Have Saved 87 Million Lives, Says UN Humanitarian ChiefEnglish
0·4 days agoExactly. All these arguments about how “the money would be more useful elsewhere” only serve to confuse people into thinking the government is just making uninformed financial decisions. This isn’t a mistake, they’re doing everything on purpose to make as much money for themselves as they can, and they love how we’re giving them the free out of being able to claim they were just dumb. Everyone who would be convinced that this regime needs to be toppled already believes it; there’s nobody left to be swayed, only confused about the true danger of their enemy.
Community is uncomfortable; when you’re dealing with other people there’s no way to avoid getting mixed up in each others’ emotional states at least a little bit. Even with this comment that you made and I’m now responding to, we’ve given each other a small spot in our emotional space for the day, and it’s our responsibility to at least take that fact into consideration. You don’t have to be nice, but if you want to interact with people, even online, you’ll find more success if you think about their feelings as much as your own.
Eh, I support my local record store. Lady’s just trying to sell good music at fair prices while paying her workers a good wage. I’d hardly call her Petty Bourgeois just because she’s trying to give my community a better option than Amazon for physical media; she’s barely making ends meet at that. Pretty sure I make more money than her just working a normal office job.
Sun, cheap prices, and crime!
They don’t like integration, they like America. In their eyes immigrants will never be American regardless of how they act, they just think the American way of life is the only acceptable way of life, regardless of location.
Well, sure, war is rarely profitable for the participants, but it’s very often profitable for the giant corporations in charge of supplying the weapons and other gear, and who lobby heavily to ensure the people who are willing to make up a reason to go to war are also the ones who get to decide whether to go to war. War is nothing more than another corporate profit push at the expense of the populace.

World News@lemmy.world•US tech firms successfully lobbied EU to keep datacentre emissions secretEnglish
0·8 days agoIt said they lobbied for it, which means that the politicians don’t care, so they give them something they do care about so that they support it anyway, namely money.
It’s the whole reason 99% of politicians choose that career in the first place. All they have to do is look like they don’t support something that the wealthy want them to support, and they’ll be given buckets of money to sway their vote.
This isn’t 2 things; Trump is a part of the billionaire class. They’re just not being specific enough, mostly because many of them work for the billionaire class.
She probably assumes the landing location is entirely random, which is ridiculous to anyone who has even the slightest understanding of the amount of planning needed for space travel, but those people and the people who believe space travel is fake are not the same people.

Polaris is only up to about 70 million years old. So, technically it’s likely to be way younger than the rings of Saturn, but it’s still crazy to me to think that a star was just… not there until it showed up one day, and sharks were there well beforehand.
