One can definitely go overboard with this, though. I have had to read a lot of code where someone broke something up into several functions that only had the effective of forcing me to constantly bounce around all over source file to figure out what was going on without improving clarity at all.

Ugh, I absolutely hate reading code with a ton of variables that are only used once, because each introduction of a variable is a new thing that I have to first parse and then track to figure out what it does. I would much rather read a pipeline that expresses what is going on concisely without introducing extraneous elements. In particular, I thought that the pipeline at the start of the article was perfectly clear and did not need any of the subsequent modifications.

You missed the part where the reason why they are doing this is because the person who started XLibre had previously committed so much bad code to XOrg that needed to be rolled back that the git history is now a mess that is hindering forward progress. The goal of the new release is to start over from 2024 and cherry-pick the commits they want to keep in order to clean the history up.

It is true that I personally do not find most of her recent political comics to be particularly funny or insightful–which is fine, she does not have to draw to satisfy me–but there are plenty of her comics which are not about politics but about cats or silly reflections on life, especially before Trump got elected.

So in short, thank you very much for your comment because it totally inspired me to check this person out and find comics of theirs that I enjoyed! 😀

What’s scary is all of the ways they can track you even without your browser actively cooperating. For example, they can create an HTML5 canvas, render a bunch of shapes, and then probe individual pixels to get a read on your graphics card and drivers. The EFF has a very educational test you can subject your browser to in order to see how easy it is to fingerprint it based on these kinds of things.
