No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are fluctuations in Earth's magnetic field during geomagnetic storms actually enough to cause stress on our cells and bodies, or am I encountering junk science?English
0·14 days agoThe narrative isn’t so much the static magnetic field but fluctuating/time varying magnetic fields induced on Earth during magnetic storms. When a magnetic field changes it can induce currents in tissues. It’s proportional to both the strength of the field and the rate of change. During an extreme geomagnetic storm, the rate of change can be up to 500 nanoteslas per minute.
It’s being argued that these tiny (less than 1% of Earth’s static field strength) fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field are stressing cells and the body, resulting in the correlations between geomagnetic storms and heart attacks, strokes, autonomic dysfunction, and other serious illnesses.

0·14 days agoMine did, too, then I looked into it and it does seem there’s a lot of research concluding that fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field during geomagnetic storms is causing more heart attacks, nervous system dysregulation, etc. https://magneticstorms.co/health/heart but I’m not as well versed in science compared to many of the people on Lemmy.

0·14 days agoI thought so, too, but it does seem like a lot of seemingly reputable sources are talking about it as if it’s common knowledge now… https://magneticstorms.co/health/heart and yeah, good point! I think there are sites where you can track space weather, but if someone’s a paramedic I’d hope they’d be tracking patients more than space weather…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Theme park enjoyers: How do you feel about the Six Flags X2 rollercoaster permanently closing down amidst claims it's deadly, even though 4 G's isn't remotely enough to cause bleeding on the brain?English
0·22 days agoThen what is? Because the articles mention it’s the G-forces. And the X2 does not feature any prominent negative G’s. Additionally, modern roller coaster safety standards cap negative forces near a brief -1.5 G to -2.0 G peak.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why the hysteria surrounding the "deadly" Six Flags "X2" rollercoaster, when 4 G's isn't remotely enough G-force to cause fatal brain bleeds? A peak of 4 G is about average for a rollercoaster.English
0·22 days agoYou don’t have to study neuroscience to realize that higher G rollercoasters aren’t tearing people’s brains open and 4 G’s is merely average for a rollercoaster.

0·22 days agoBrain injuries from what? It’s been established that 4 G’s can’t cause brain-bleeds. 4 G’s is average for a rollercoaster. Some even go up to 6 yet these 6 G rollercoasters aren’t causing brain-bleeds.
Keyword here is “allege”.

0·22 days agoI bought 4 G’s up since the articles are trying to spin it as the G forces causing the deaths. In reality, the X2 at 4 G’s falls in the median for peak G forces in terms of rollercoasters.

0·22 days agoNo, the lawsuits are indeed saying the G forces are exploding their brains.

0·22 days agoWhen you look at it from a scientific perspective, 4 G is average for a rollercoaster. And 4 G’s is not even close to being powerful enough to tear people’s brains apart. To say I’m skeptical these lawsuits are being 100% truthful would be an understatement. I’ve ridden the X2 plenty of times.
This study accounted for weather, and found an increased rate of nearly 30 percent in heart attacks (MI) during geomagnetic storms. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00484-013-0660-0 That is massive, akin to the increase you’d expect during an environmental catastrophe, such as a severe heatwave or something.
