Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What skill did you learn that was not worth the effort?
0·1 month agoI’m a big believer that computation should be a skill we learn in school. I think a lot of normal people would benefit from being able to make some simple scripts in python for personal use or even just for fun. I hope you don’t always think that the coding skills are useless <3. That said I agree the networking stuff you can throw out the window! I know enough to know that I will never fully understand how network topology works. Every time I get to the /24 or whatever that’s called my eyes start rolling.

0·3 months agoOoh, thanks for the recommendations! I haven’t read any of those yet.
I love scifi but have always struggled as some, especially some of the classic scifi authors, seem to write women pretty strangely. Just takes me out of it. My favorite scifi book recently has been Moonbound (not romance, just a great book IMO).
My current scifi/romance read is The Veridian Priestess. A little explicit, but it gives dune/chronicles of riddick vibes with a heavy space religion plot. For me it’s also a local author which is always cool. I also have heard really good things about “Of Monsters and Mainframes”. But yea, kinda sucks how some people view it. As a guy I’ve gotten a few sideyes from other men, but I’ve also had the occasional guy who also likes it. Bit of a mixed bag.
Honestly I have more of a complex over not reading ‘proper literature’, but I decided a while back that it’s better to read for fun than to not read at all.
Edit: While we’re talking about shitty books, behold the worst book I’ve ever read 3/4’s of: He Who Fights With Monsters.
Had a friend swear up and down it was incredible, ended up sending him a mini dissertation on how unbelievably bad it was. Didn’t realize it started as a Wattpad story when I read it. 😬
As someone who likes the genre I’m just really happy there’s so much content being made. Yea some of it is slop trying to recapture the fad of ACOTAR (the book pictured), but some of the stuff coming out of it is really good. Also, because of this, there’s more romance in a lot of genres that didn’t have much before (looking at you sci-fi).
Personally, I love love and reading romance brings me joy. Some of these books are cringy teen angst with unrealistic and toxic relationships (mainly the YA side), but I’ve found that most I’ve picked up have healthy relationships with interesting plots that don’t revolve around just the romance.
That said, pure romance books (the pastel section of the store) have burned me too many times for me to bother trying anymore. Almost everything that this post complains about but 1000%.
Ngl, this post reminds me of the backlash that seems to follow anything coded for women that becomes really popular.

0·5 months agoAssuming you’re talking about original art I think Etsy is your best bet. Sometimes eBay has some. You also get some really cool altered art where they extend the background etc. Its not cost effective though and there’s a lot of ai art now. My rule of thumb is anything over 4$ gets proxied now for a deck. There are sites like https://tolarianlibrary.com/ that do pretty good 1:1 copies that pass the sniff test for casual play. I really really hate when art is economically locked, philosophically art should be for all. I try and always proxy the prettiest version of cards. The secret lair copies aren’t perfect but their pretty darn close. There’s a handful of other sites I can DM you that I trust. To answer your original question I think there is a site for proxy designs, but they don’t give you the cards just the designs.

Linux@lemmy.ml•We wrote "esperto-wiimote", a Wiimote remapper with good IR tracking and complex key combos
0·5 months agoIn the future you might consider picking up a dolphin bar. It handles all the Bluetooth stuff and has four modes, one of which is a mouse mode with motion controls and one of which is using the nunchuck. Still, very cool!

It’s such a weird feeling as a long time Zelda fan who absolutely vehemently hates this. It boggles my mind that everyone seems to love it. It just feels like slop to me. The art direction is “make it hyper realistic” and yet everyone seems to feel like its some cutesy toy effect? It seems to me like they couldn’t decide whether they wanted to do a remake or a remaster. The models and animation are 1:1 but the mechanics are changed and everything looks like an unreal engine demo. The castle town was the best part but man the vibes are wrong. Zelda games almost always have a cohesive, distinct artistic style. I would have loved something weird and fresh.
NGL though the creepy mix of childish and realistic will probably hit hard for MM.
Edit: forgot about Navis voice… I also hate that
