I’ll add to this a bit. I know so many people who want to buy a fixer upper to save money. We went that route, and while my mortgage is sort of low, the repair costs are insane. I did all the work myself, and we spent over $100k in 5 years. Houses are expensive to own if you care about them.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What have you been working on or learning to do recently?
0·3 days agoYep I’ve got it all. I wouldn’t even be considering doing it if I wasnt already very handy and comfortable in most of the PPE. Chaps will be new, but the discomfort is worth the safety.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What have you been working on or learning to do recently?
0·4 days agoTree removal. I have a shitty blue spruce that needs to be removed and I’m too cheap to pay someone to do it. So I’m practicing climbing and using a chainsaw.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why did the Crocodile Hunter die? Was he aggervating sting rays. I watched and messed with them in the gulf. But not one has ever try to sting me. Was he piising them off that much?
0·7 days agoThere is a video that was never released of his death. The claim was that the sting ray hit his heart directly, which makes sense. Sting rays are very easy to agitate accidentally, sort of like a bee. He got really unlucky even if he were annoying an animal.
Hate the pointless narrative that he was bad for wildlife. Most American millennials love nature because of Steve. He is why we like the aussie accent in bluey imo.
I’m a bit over 6 figures and if I didn’t pay Healthcare and 100% of our dual income household taxes I’d get ~$5k twice a month.

Technology@lemmy.world•Students are speeding through their online degrees in weeks, alarming educatorsEnglish
11·21 days agoWe are all arguing different hypotheticals. My problem is my personal experiences.
One of them was a rapist. The other was a high level tech salesman child abuser. So I’m 2 for 2 and my opinions are skewed forever.

1·21 days agoDifferent life situations for everyone, I think.
I don’t mean strictly professional honesty, but my experiences leak into how I view something like this. The biggest liar I know is still in jail for raping children, so I have a skewed view of honesty.
My industry and group are weird when it comes to credentials. We don’t have a strict, you need this degree situation.

3·21 days agoI value honesty more than most people I’m realizing. If a hire is open about their credentials I would not care.
I’ve witnessed what happens when people are ok with liars. It’s gross, and no one should normalize it.

2·21 days agoHonesty is my problem with it. If they were open about it I wouldn’t care. But if they hid it and were hired because of the degree I’d fire them almost regardless of their work.
It’s something I value because dishonest people are usually quite horrible in my life experience.

Technology@lemmy.world•Students are speeding through their online degrees in weeks, alarming educatorsEnglish
104·22 days agoI dont know how I feel about this.
On one hand, degrees are somewhat good for education in lots of industries.
On the other hand, I would fire someone instantly if they had cheated their degree like this.
Degrees are also very expensive.
I guess if it was a useless degree then it wouldn’t matter in the first place.

NonCredibleDefense@sh.itjust.works•If not Iran's rocket, then why rocket shaped?English
0·1 month agoYou mocked them, I’ll call you stupid for it. You claimed they reduced heat transfer rate, which is false. The answer is in the article you linked.
For Artemis II, it would return through Earth’s atmosphere at a steeper angle, spending fewer minutes in the environment where this outgassing occurred during Artemis I.
This change is a perfect example of engineering research. Artemis I was within the expected boundaries of the heat shield material. It performed worse than expected, so they adjusted its heat exposure rate based on the actual outcome. The guy in the article seems to not understand that this is a huge part of actual engineering.
I’m a mechanical engineer. The article is mostly fluff sucking off to the rich guy you quoted.

NonCredibleDefense@sh.itjust.works•If not Iran's rocket, then why rocket shaped?English
0·1 month agoThey sped up the re-entry to increase heat transfer rate to reduce off gassing issues. This is a great example of why engineering sometimes doesn’t release a full description of issues, because dumb people don’t understand why a decision is made.

Mine was the look under the siding and find shitloads of water damage. Don’t tell the county how many studs I replaced.
Add that to the horrible repairs done prior and I’ve been working constantly to get it to “not giving a shit” levels of OK. Sucks a bit, but I love our home now. Landscaping isn’t done yet though.
