  • please don’t attack the few useful tools that came out of this: machine translation, computer vision and text to speech all made leaps forward and made the internet so much more accessible due to these tools.

Can you show me how these tools came out of pushing AI down our throats? Pretty sure they were well available and in development before the whole “AI” buzzword push.

    • Translating other users’ comments

Seems to me like what they mean is twisting someone’s words through re-generating / changing intent (accidentally or not), not necessarily translating a language.

For an analogy, your phone/computer/whatever you’re using to read this, probably has some parts from dubious places, be it cobalt mines with terrible working environments or whatever. I don’t see anyone making a fuss about that, and rejecting commits unless they’re made from an ethically sourced machine

Uh, pretty sure there’s plenty of complaints about working conditions in mines etc.

Also, this is just a fork, you are free to use whatever you want. Nobody is forcing you to use this.

I will maybe use it though because I prefer software without AI

  • I think Inkscape’s UI could def also gain some good improvements even just with little technical know-how! I’ve been trying to make a UI style for it from scratch purely through GTK’s CSS layer (no touching internal code or recompiling at all) and I’m pretty impressed of what’s possible. (see here)

If anyone is even just familiar with CSS, you could certainly make good contributions to the UI layer. Or help out in my repo i posted above, I need to port the style to Inkscape 1.5 / GTK4 (aswell as cover some missing stuff e.g. right-to-left) but I don’t find a lot of time to do it.
