Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Sharks existed before trees. Imagine being scared of something older than your entire concept of furniture
0·6 days agoAnother fun tree fact I heard, the reason why coal exists was because trees existed on land for a long time before decomposers existed to digest their fibers. They just died and were buried intact. This actually caused a problem with sequestering so much CO2 that the earth went into an ice age.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Your display contains no yellow pixels - yet it displays the color yellow just fine
0·12 days agoI always thought it was crazy to wonder what the qualia of colors we can’t see but other animals can is. It’s sort of like being a cat or some other animal with limited color vision and trying to imagine what humans see. How would you prove to a cat that those colors exist?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think is the modern day equivalent to asbestos in 1960?
0·14 days agoMostly feeling the vibes given the recent Australian report linking nicotine vapes to cancer and the anecdotal evidence I have for these strong vapes causing all sorts of negative mental outcomes or dependency for people I know who use them heavily. We still have a lot of space to learn about unintended consequences here and I’m pessimistic.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Conversations with old people would be a lot shorter if they never had any ailments.
0·14 days agoI’ve got the big 4 birthday coming very soon. I already have enough ailments to complain about but I’ll wait for now. Not enough time in the day to be bitter about that.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Windows 10 refugees flock to Linux in what devs call their "biggest launch ever"
0·6 months agoI guess it is the year of the Linux desktop for at least some people.
I’ve used Linux desktop in various forms for just over two decades, this has to be the fourth time it felt like Linux was having its chance to seize marketshare. Each time it ends up not being the mass adoption that people hope for but it feels like the community grows each time so I think it is neat nonetheless.

There isn’t a universal answer, I expect it depends a lot on your worldview and whether you got past your hangups earlier in life, and what your health, regrets and living situation are. I have anecdotal evidence both ways.
