I think you and I are used to seeing “life choices” as a canard used to rationalize psychopathic public policies (just-world fallacy), so it is a red flag. That’s not to say that personal responsibility doesn’t exist, of course. I just reject the idea that the fact that we might help someone who “doesn’t deserve” help is a reason to help nobody.
