I feel like this is a really hard topic to talk about. Ramping up production of oil is bad for the environment, but good for the economy. I looked it up and Canada generated approximately 6.3% of all the oil in the world in the past year. Is most of that being used as fuel? Sure. About 90-95% is used as fuel with the rest being used to make plastic and other derivatives.
But here’s the thing. Canada is in a recession thanks primarily to our neighbor to the south. We need to find new sources of revenue or people start losing everything. It’s so easy to say oil bad when you have a secure job, but not everyone does. Carney’s job is not to do what’s right for the world, but what’s right for his fellow countrymen and women.
Do I like that there will be more burning of fuel? Absolutely not. Do I like that my Canadian peers will be able to stave off poverty for longer due to more oil being harvested? Absolutely. The choice sucks, but the alternative is arguably worse for Canadians in a global economy that doesn’t care for their comforts.
I think we need to confront a hard truth as Canadians and stop whining about oil production: it’s better to burn to death on a full stomach than an empty one.
None of this will mean much if we continue hastening global issues by contributing to climate change. A better economy built upon making the world worse for everyone in the coming decades is just kicking the problem down the road. Or in the case of many politicians, beyond their expiry date, which may be what they are counting on.
