Then maybe, just maybe, we should start canceling short distance flights?
Would also be a little bit less CO2 pumped out for a while.
I don’t know what’s “short distance” for you, but a flight from Zagreb to Amsterdam takes about 2 hours.
Using public transportation on the same route is 20+ hours at best and you need to switch between bus and train four times. Driving is 10+ hours.
Maybe, just maybe, we should stop immediately providing kerosine to private jets first? And droping subsidies for jet fuel and financing public transport instead?
I’m sure with todays technology we could find out which connections have an alternative by train in an acceptable time (maybe +100%?).
That is not short distance. Frankfurt - Berlin is short distance.

nah suspend all flight, no one flies until the train tracks are built and optimized.
that’s the silver lining about every oil crisis. we may see a good focus on efficiency of oil use and it’s replacement where possible.
And no EU official will even protest US actions, because they fear Trump will leave Nato.

which would be the best outcome for europe
1990’s: “I wonder if we could brew booze out of jet fuel”
2020’s: “I wonder if we could brew jet fuel out of booze”
