The chief executive of a Michigan bank has lost her job after facing backlash for a social media photo of her family in sweatshirts that read “Lake America,” referencing Donald Trump’s relabeling of Lake Ontario.

Jane Smith from Family First Credit Union recently went viral after sharing the photo of her and three relatives wearing navy blue crewnecks with the words “Lake America” scrawled in white. The picture was snapped as her family left on September 11 for a 10-day trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, but Smith says the sweatshirts were edited onto their bodies using AI.

“We weren’t trying to make a political statement,” Smith told Michigan outlet WJRT. “However, we were kind of poking fun at the fact that one of the Great Lakes’ names were getting changed.”

Family First Credit Union announced Wednesday that Smith was no longer with the company and that Jason Acosta, the chief operations officer, would serve as interim CEO.

We should quietly celebrate when MAGA gets hung up on the symbolic. Celebrate because they’re not doing any actual harm, and quietly so as not to interrupt them.

It’s in a different category because it affects how people understand the world. It also continues the erasure of the First Nation people who named the lake

I can’t tell you how much I wanted to shake people and say “Oh you hate that France, the one that went bankrupt, had a revolution, and killed tens of thousands of people by giving you all the money you would ever need just so that you could succeed in separating from the UK? That’s who you are angry about?”

Just gunna let you borrow our navy to make sure you become independent, don’t worry about it

At least in my experience the role the French played in the founding of the US is extremely understated to the point it’s essentially a footnote and hand waved away as unimportant, the founding it taught in a way that makes it seem inevitable so the French being involved is made to seem irrelevant

So they posted a photo on social media of themselves wearing Lake America shirts. It was either:
    A) An absurdist joke poking fun at the renaming, as they said it was
    B) A political statement that they would like the lake to be called “Lake America”
    C) A political statement that USA should annex Canada

C is kinda a stretch. A and B are not a big deal. I don’t see why people are so happy about this person being fired. It seems like something totally reasonable to post, though maybe in poor taste if you believe interpretation B.

    Not really a big deal

I’ve got to assume this bank had a lot of Canadian customers who would rapidly be taking their business elsewhere if they did nothing.

This is disgusting in my opinion. However, I don’t own the business, and it’s their call, not mine.

Some people were offended? Yeah… somebody is always offended, and that’s okay.

For example, I am offended by this decision. It’s a cruel world

How can someone make a statement like that without it being political? They should also be permanently banned from Canada.

Everything is just so aggressively stupid.

With every passing day I am more and more shocked that humanity made it this far. I guess it’s because, up until relatively recently, we never had the real opportunity to destroy ourselves.

    Tick tock.

Yeah, that’s a political statement, you dolt. Turns out, doubling down on stupidity is bad for a CEO’s career.

It’s been said to death but the people that call themselves big time conservatives and do this kind of shit don’t think anything they do and believe is political, even their political beliefs, it’s just “normal”. Only things that don’t fit into or jive with their worldview are political

Is there any way in hell AI would get all of that text, and those symbols correct? You can be 135% sure she doesn’t know how to do touchups. I seriously doubt that’s AI.

And what, she was getting death threats from Canadians from the photo going viral? She’s that famous and recognizable? Bullshit. Real shirts, really being worn in real life.

There is another photo of the same group in normal clothes. So one photo has to be AI and probably it’s the one with the “Lake America” on it. That said, it hardly matters if the tops were real or not. Somebody thought it a great idea to create an AI photo and spread it around social media and found out how great an idea it was. The stupid part is they were going to Canada and the bank presumably has a lot of Canadian customers. And they do this? Fucking wild.
