Heyyy, I started because I wanted save money and move away from Google to hosting mini cloud for my whole family that we rely on.
- I have TrueNAS Server with i5-8400, 32GB of RAM, 256gb nvme for OS, 512gb SSD for appdata dataset, 8tbx2 and 4tbx2 mirrored totaling 12TB of usable space with 512gb SSD for cache for main storage dataset.

Well this my small production server infrastructure that i am very proud of. And I’m so glad I have UPS for both of the server. Thank you)))
My stack (Docker on Pi 5/Debian) is much bigger than this, but my top three favourites (not in any particular order) are:
- Adguard Home (browsing on my phone is finally bearable).
- Wireguard (using wg-easy) to not deal with port forwarding.
- Ignis, which I heavily prefer over WebObsidian. Aside from CouchDB giving me hell, it doesn’t use VNC to stream to your browser–it’s built on Electron and all the hard work is done in-browser (am happy to glaze this project further).
My Current Self-hosted Setup

Been running this hardware setup since July 2025, although a couple of services have been added in that time. All works really well and has minimal maintenance as everything is fully automated with scripts. -

Main one I use right now is a media center running FreeBSD and XFCE, and KDE Connect for remote-like functionality.
I just play files with mpv manually, but might write a front-end for it one day.

Hey, I’m new here - but not new to self-hosting :-)
Self-hosting started for me via hosting a few services on my NAS - and then it escalated a bit…
At home:
- 2 Proxmox hosts (Miniforum MS-01 & GEEKOM XT12 Pro), services running mostly as Docker stacks in LXC containers, deployed via Komodo
- (several) Synology NAS (DS918+, DS1520+, DX517, RS2423+) for storage and backups
- UniFi network hardware (UDM Pro, USW Aggregation, USW Pro 48 PoE, U6-Lite APs) with a couple of VLANs. 10 GbE where possible.
- Technitium as DNS (recently replaced my old setup with AdGuard Home)
- Authentik for SSO in front of almost everything
- Nginx Proxy Manager as reverse proxy, Uptime Kuma to monitor stuff, Homepage as dashboard
- The actual fun stuff: Immich, Home Assistant, Paperless-NGX, Mealie, Bar Assistant, Stirling-PDF, Forgejo, Dawarich, LubeLogger, Umami, PBS, Grafana, AFFiNE, Actual, lifeGLANCE, Grocy, Rallly, Rackula, SnapOtter, Wallos, Homebox, RomM, Excalidraw my media stack… the list keeps growing, as I’m sure you all know.
Outside:

My Self-Hosting Journey
I began my self-hosting journey in 2021 with the goal of hosting a game server for friends so they would not need to pay for external hosting. Through onsite IT work, I acquired several 6th and 8th generation i7 systems from companies that were downsizing or upgrading. After adding inexpensive NVMe storage and APC battery backups, the environment grew quickly.
What started as a single server eventually expanded to three dedicated game servers running 27/4, supporting up to 270 concurrent players at peak. These servers have been up for almost 4 years now.
Internet Connection
- ISP: Optimum Fiber (1 Gbps / 1 Gbps symmetrical) – $65/month
- ISP router configured in bridge mode if I return it they take away a discount.

I even started hosting the website for my local Italian restaurant and they haven’t even realised it yet.
Wait, what? How are hosting someone else’s website?
OK, here’s how it happened.
I was hungry, and I wanted to see the menu for my local pizza joint. I couldn’t find it anywhere.
I discovered that all their socials linked to a website that wouldn’t load. When I checked, the domain had lapsed.
Out of frustration, I purchased the domain and pulled the last snapshot of their website off archive.org. It had their full menu as a PDF.
6 months later and it’s still getting visitors from their facebook page, who are viewing the menu. They haven’t even realised.

No CDN. The secret is way simpler: It’s a static site. Just a bunch of files served directly by Nginx. I use Pelican to generate the site from Markdown files.
i don’t self-host yet, but i have an old pc in my house, i just need to bring it with me to colege, so i can learn and start self-hosting
