  • this is just simply not true in the context of this discussion. these people want to grow native plants in a vulnerable ecosystem that has been limited down in scope through mining operations, human exploitation, and encroachment from non-native invasive species. in particular in central pennsylvania where this is occuring gypsome weed is choking out the native flowers that pollinators depend on.

in particular they are looking to grow sunflowers and goldenrod which are native to their area and offer a high value to local pollinators. however, these plants violate most HOA regulations because they grow taller than 6 feet

it’s a folk song written about the 1850s/60s abolitionist/terrorist who was put to death for treason in 1860 for attempting to inspire a mass national slave uprising in Harper’s Ferry, VA (today WV).

Fun fact, the guy who lives in his house is super cool! (i used to live down the street from his headquarters in West Virginia)

We’re the women of the union and we sure know how to fight.
We’ll fight for women’s issues and we’ll fight for women’s rights.
A woman’s work is never done from morning until night.
    Women make the union strong!
    (Chorus)

It is we who wash the dishes, scrub the floors and clean the dirt,
Feed the kids and send them off to school—and then we go to work,
Where we work for half men’s wages for a boss who likes to flirt.
But the union makes us strong!
    (Chorus)

  • i’m interested in this. as a southerner, i offer everyone water when they arrive at my house because water is a basic human need and most people won’t ask for it when they need it because it can be a struggle to get it and they don’t want to put me out. it’s just like… a little showing of mutual respect and love for our shared struggle that takes not much to offer. if we’re eating, i’ll offer you food to.

if i don’t offer you water i’m communicating in the southern way that you are not welcome and your presence in my household has been imposed on me. i go by the standard Nikki Giovanni taught me: everyone gets fed, racists can fetch their own water.

but i acknowlege this is likely a cultural difference. my wife hates this pattern of showing solidarity and finds it confusing. so like… how do you and your people demonstrate that someone is welcome in your space?

  • yup. the cult won’t survive the loss of the cult leader. however, the cultists will still remain. 45/47 wasn’t even the cult leader until about 3 years after the cult had started reshaping republican politics. the death of 47 will bring about a great reshuffling, not the permanent end of all human suffering. the things that need doing are for us to educate the children on how to recognize and resist fascism. fascism will remain a threat to all humanity so long as a single person carries its flame in their heart. so learn: authoritarianism is not about the authority (person) it’s about the authoritarians (people). authoritarianism is only made possible by people voluntarily carrying out the actions demanded by dear leader. if you want to stop dear leader you have to gather a coalition of people who believe other things are possible.

  • i had someone tell me as an Appalachian, i didn’t understand the power of a union the way she did as a Michigander and i just stared at her, dumbfounded. America’s first unions were in the south. the most powerful union America ever had was based in West Virginia. we absolutely know the power of a union, and wrote many of the tunes that have been solidified as Union Songs. the reason our unions don’t have the power they once did is largely that we couldn’t get solidarity from the Industrial unions for our Primary Unions. our collective direct action was thwarted by class traitors claiming to act on class solidarity.

but the thing is, the southern libertarian trope? that’s not a fuckin’ act. southerners legit hate authoritarians. we hate them because we’ve suffered under them. we don’t need city folk telling us to hate authority. we need help educating our neighbors that a libertarian capitalist is just a fascist faking.

and i’m seeing something i’ve never seen before right now. there were zero pro-trump counter protestors at No Kings. zero nazis. people are unified in their understanding of who the problem is right now that i’ve never seen before. and i live in a right to work state. but still the union is gaining power. people would rather potentially get fired than have their boss be a local microgod.
