It’s interesting there’s a sharp line between what women and men believe here. Sadly, not knowing the details makes the propaganda more likely to work. Heard and her lawyer were stupid, but that doesn’t change what likely actually happened:

• The dog shit the bed, because of course it did it had a problem with bowel control. The fact that Depp’s team have managed to convince people of this ridiculous idea shows just how effective propaganda can be.
• Heard was raped and abused
• You would have to believe that Heard lied to her own therapist for months to manufacture this. Occam’s razor, no, it happened.

The reason people don’t like Heard is:

I did watch the docco, and unfortunately it doesn’t really make it’s case coherently or entertainingly. That’s pretty bad because the creator is meant to be a comedian, and he really should have been able to ruin Shearer’s career but he’s just not all that great.

As for Apu, the reason he sucks is that he started as a caricature but somehow ended up a main character, and the creators have kind of painted themselves in a corner. Is he meant to be a wacky stereotype like the Italian chef, or are we meant to have pathos, like Skinner? Add that to the fact that there just aren’t many Indians on screen, and you have Apu as mostly the only Indian representation on TV.

It’s anachronistic, orientalist, and just a bit lame to do jokes like that. Heck, it was lame when they created the character, that’s why the specific note was not to make him Indian, but Shearer did it anyway.

For Fusion, IIUC each of the parties individually had enough members (though maybe marginal), that’s why they could run candidates in the past. You need the members to be cashed up enough to be able to run a candidate though. So for senate, realistically you need 3, and that’s $6,000. If the party support is distributed around Australia, like Fusion’s is, you must run 3x a number of states, and that adds up fast.

Sadly, it costs so much that even serious non-joke parties cannot run. Just running candidates can cost as much as a new car.

Bit of both maybe? I know there’s solarpunkmemes, but it’s not super active. I do feel like I’d want a feel of the community talking crap rather than the broader Lemmy ecosystem. Got any recommendations of good communities? Maybe just subscribing to a couple will change up the vibes.

Anyone else feel like this place is a bit sterile? Reddit, for all its faults (and there are many) just has a good meme game. This place is more wholesome but every now and then you want a bit of popcorn bullshit.

OK so firstly, when I say “exploitation”, I mean in the economic sense. So you “exploit” the land to make a sugar plantation and then the plantation pulls all the resources out of the soil, you take the sugar and leave. This is basically what colonisation was, it was exploitation of people, yes, but also fundamentally of the entire ecosystem, the land, the water, and so on.

Permaculture is in some ways a response to this, to take something already “degraded” and build back. So you take degraded soils, then you invest in those soils over years through a cycle, and you use nature to help you. Then you give nature the first spoils, and you take what remains. It’s a fundamentally different way of thinking to pastoralism. While the solarpunk manifesto doesn’t mention permaculture, it’s pretty clear this is the intent.

The “punk” in Solarpunk is about rebellion, counterculture, post-capitalism, decolonialism and enthusiasm. It is about going in a different direction than the mainstream, which is increasingly going in a scary direction.

Part of the problem with the manifesto is that it expects a lot of prior knowledge. Most people don’t know what “decolonialism” even is, so it just becomes a buzzword, but you can tell by the thoughtfulness of the way the manifesto is written that they have the prior knowledge, and expect that of the people reading it.

The meme is about “what if everything white people did was right? Just add some plants to it!” and like, unless they actually contend with the history, that’s the kind of solarpunk we’ll get.
