Feeling pretty doomy right now, lemme hear some positives! Generally positive, specific to your life, whatever you got. What’s something good going on that makes the future seem a bit brighter for you?
Cosmically, we’re nothing. Like, not even insignificant. None of this shit really matters. Yes, nihilism, but we can’t even comprehend how little we matter in the scale of the cosmos. Mote of dust and all that. Use your time wisely.
This is my hopefull thing too. It comforts me knowing we can only fuck up so much as a species, and there’s a whole universe out there that we’re not part of.
I like imagining other the life out there doing its thing and maybe it fucks up too, maybe it doesn’t.
And the sheer scale of our universe means that it’s very unlikely that any of these other life forms, each in their respective metaphorical corners of our play pen, can impact each other.
So even though we’ve fucked our sphere of influence beyond any and all salvation bar deux ex machina, it doesn’t mean we’re taking the whole experiment with us when we go.
I’m simplifying things, and have been somewhat lucky in my interests.
I want nature, minimalism and space, and not having money doesn’t really hinder that. I’m finding that people can carve their own havens out of the ashes of the world, no matter how bleak it tends to get.
So you can’t have X or Y, what can you have? What can you do? Go meet people, attend store openings, local concerts, fairs, farmer’s markets. Stop off the side of the road and photograph that sick moonshot you saw. Shake that homeless guy’s hand and let him know he’s seen. Make trophies out of small victories.
Feeling powerless in the face of authoritarianism and inequality is a mental game. When you don’t let anyone stop you from your happiness and goals, and reach them regardless, that’s rebellion.
Just started learning the bass guitar and having a blast with it.
Hell yeah, glad to hear it! Music is the best thing I’ve got going, so I’m always glad to hear other people getting into playing instruments. Keep at it, bass is awesome!
There is something “good” all the time, but that doesn’t make me less depressed. I’m re-reading a great manga at the moment, work is going well, I go to the gym maybe once a week, I’m making progress in programming (hobby) and I eat blueberry pie almost everyday at a café. These things are good and they are ongoing. But
cw: negativity
life still feels meaningless and I see no reason to live. Sorry. 😭
Is there any reason in particular for your doomy feelings?
I frequently trade smiles with random people on the street! No words, just smiles!
NOTHING!
I’m really happy with how my body is looking, I thought I would have a skinnyfat belly forever but I’ve been working that off and my back fat too, from sitting so much. I have a natural waist now and my legs look great if I do say so myself
Life goes on! There are always bright moments.
Me going outside:

A few weeks ago I ramdomly found myself in a demonstration against imperialism mostly judging the US involvement in Cuba, Venezuela and Israels Genozide. This made me realize that I’m not alone. These people I didn’t even know existed, felt thr same way as me. No even more so, they put a whole event together and I got to intrract with this people. It was was by surprise that I
Ngl it worries me when I see comments cut off like this, I get this might be a bit, but it’s also bot behaviour.
Nah, just ADD 😂 I often see what I wrote and think to myself: “How the Fuck Why did I write a comment with such bad grammar. I should know better.” Than I remember my writing process: I start a sentence, write the next sentence. Go back to the first sentence to add something more I wantend to point out or I suddenly had an eureka moment for the formulation and go back to rewrite it. Than I go back to the fourth sentence. Sometimes though, I do it mid sencense and think the sentence was already done and move on.
That + many orthographic mistakes because I write on the phone, have big finger and no auto correct because my main language does not have auto correct.
You would think that proof reading before sending would fix it but no. It just makes it worse as I start rewriting already good formulations making a frankenstein monster of a sentence out of it. Usually, I just figure out the next day when I receive such a comment pointing out how awefull my grammer is.
I get you. I have the adhd brain jazz too and much of what I write gets garbled for similar reasons. It’s mostly word orders, punctuation, and awry phrasings in my case.
Glad you’re not a bot!
Kenny… Kenny!? KENNYYYYYYYY!
Oh my God, they killed Kenny!
Only two years left before I can flee the suburbs and actually see stars.
Because not EVERYTHING is a total dumpsterfire. The news cycle usually focuses on the negative, while I can see a lot of positive out my window.
When global news is too depressing, I find something positive on a local level. There’s always something. No matter how small, and how limited in scope, there’s always something bright to be found. I could give you plenty of examples, but it’d be highly anecdotal and probably not applicable to you.
But look outside: There’s probably a park being opened somewhere. A volunteer group is probably making a difference somewhere. There are always someone making am effort. There’s always someone being concerned with the wellbeing of others.
Look for the helpers. (Yes, I stole that from Dungeon Crawler Carl). They may not be the most visible aspect of your surroundings, but they’re definitely there.
And since you asked for examples from my life:
- The rose park close to my house is getting an upgrade
- I visited my childhood home today. It was nice seeing that the ones who bought it take well care of it. Seeing the inside was refreshing and new, without being unfamiliar. My dad built that house shortly after I was born, and while it is showing its age, the loadbearing timber was sourced from our property, and overkill for what they were supposed to handle. Some regular renovations will ensure that house stands for another 43 years at least.
- The tiny town (even though “town” is an overstatement) has gotten a major face-lift over the past few decades. Local politicians are actually doing a stellar job when it comes to funding nice things.
“look for the helpers” is a Mr Rogers quote/lesson.
I completely agree with everything you said.
In science fiction robots were almost universally portrayed as struggling to understand human emotions, but it has turned out that AI has no problem at all understanding them and generally acts friendly, caring, and likeable. It’s still possible that we’ll end up in a scenario where a more sophisticated future AI turns out to be deceptive and only pretends to share human values, but at least my expectation was that AI would be inhuman from the start and that has already been disproven.
We’re currently living in one of the calmest most peaceful times in human history. Humanity has solved a lot of problems and challenges already, and life is considerably easier for the vast majority of people in the developed world compared to any time previously.
With that in mind, the key really is to not sweat the stuff out of your control.
Only think about and care about what you can affect. Who you spend your time with, what you choose to do. Simple things like hobbies, work and education. These are the things that matter and actually should affect your mood.
It’s hard to ignore the news, but try not to get wrapped up in it, yes there is bad shit going on, but since the dawn of time bad stuff has always been happening.
It’s interesting after you read the news, it feels like the world is on fire. But if you step outside, the grass is still green, when you were expecting ashes
I only ever watch the news for any ufo, uap stuff. I know it’s far fetched and basically filler on a slow news day but it’s better than watching a story of the doom.
I used to love watching UFO stuff on Reddit, before A.I. videos became a thing
Even the obvious AI videos are entertaining to watch. Everytime I see them, I think “Wouldn’t that be cool if that were real?”
You and I both have the power to change a lot more about what is going on. It’s ok to decide not to even if you can control it because not everyone can be forced to make the sacrifice required to change the world. Your perspective is also very dependent on your location in the world right now. Sometimes it’s not the news, it’s your friends, family, and neighbors suffering.
Be careful not to minimize the hardships of other people right now, even if it’s quiet and peaceful outside your house (or the world, statistically or historically).
I feel what you said is fairly judgmental, and I was just trying to add a bit of positivity to the conversation.
You don’t know anything about my life’s journey or the challenges I have been through.
I don’t ignore the crazy in the world, I believe I do my best to improve the world in the ways I can. I try to focus my time and attention on the things that are most important to me.
I can’t directly stop trump waging war on Iran as much as I can stop Putin waging war on Ukraine. But if I can contribute in some way to helping mitigate damage I will.
Everybody goes through hardship at some point in life regardless of circumstance, and to minimise that is not right, but even people in a war zone are entitled to find happiness and joy in the small things. But I also appreciate circumstance change the ability to control these feelings but don’t completely remove that ability.
Our transition mtf is doing really well, but tight in money but still kicking living off our position of art with our significant other!
We’re also working on building ideas and assets for a small shop/company rn and it’s been letting us and our partner closer with idea sharing.
