      Actually this outbreak is because of uncooked fruits/berries/vegetables. Basically the farm workers don’t have bathrooms or handwashing stations, so they go on the side of the field and return to work without washing their hands. Then poop bacteria gets on the produce they pick and it makes people sick.

      In the United States the average farmer is a millionaire with a 6 figure income and they could easily afford to have port a potties and handwashing stations. But they’re too cheap or lazy so 1000+ people have gotten sick.

      The CDC used to track a whole bunch of diseases so that we could intervene and limit their spread. They did this for some, typically food-borne causes of diarrhea

      Whole initiatives at charity organizations and international Health organizations actively monitor child and adult impact from diarrheal diseases.

      The US CDC used to be a latchkey to those efforts.

        Okay, fine. Yes, those are diseases that are monitored. But explosive diarrhea is a symptom, not a disease. Sometimes people just get the runs for any number of reasons.

        That’s why saying there was an increase in “explosive diarrhea” sounds odd. Public health agencies generally monitor diseases that cause diarrhea, not the symptom itself in isolation.

        It’s like saying there was an increase in fevers during the height of COVID, or a spike in people feeling pain after breaking a bone. Those are symptoms of underlying conditions, not the thing that’s actually being tracked.

        Maybe I’m missing some context, but the wording still strikes me as strange.

          The symptoms are how you understand a characterize a disease.

          Presentation of the Clarice poo from your gut is noteworthy and measured. You measure it for understanding incubation, water loss, recurrence, latency between events, and a slew of other data points.

          It is in fact how you characterize disease at large, the symptoms.

    Well the government really can’t do a good job at anything anyway so this is just an opportunity for a business to charge a monthly monitoring subscription to local governments, maybe called Disease Alert. So some states will have the data and some won’t, and it won’t matter because you really need global systemic responses to disease defense but capitalism is much more better than big dumb government.

    This argument is intentionally as incoherent as whatever the fuck the cdc is currently up to.

    I’m of the Howard Zinn opinion that we should always document events from the voice of the people who were most oppressed by the event.

    I want to hear from the housekeepers cleaning these toilets from all this explosive diarrhea.

    They’re the real victims here.

    Was it specifically that they stopped this community health survey or the people who used to run it have either been fired or quit?

    USA citizens are completely clueless to how fucked things are with all the systems that have kept them safe. Normally I would argue against inflammatory titles but more needs to be framed as “(DOGE or Trump) stopped monitoring…” versus hiding it behind the various TLA’s
