From an American-

I’m sure by now you all have seen our government’s ‘official response’ to your wildfires. I saw that, and as an American I am beyond appalled. Please know that the public statements made by our government do not reflect the thoughts and beliefs of the majority of the American people.

When the US had wildfires, Canada sent us significant support including numerous firefighting aircraft, air crews, and support equipment. This was not a small token contribution, it made a real difference. It saved lives and property and forest. That is how neighbors and friends are supposed to help each other out, and we appreciated the hell out of it. It is not forgotten.

To hear that our ‘official response’ to your wildfires is to threaten… I have no words to describe the feeling. I am proud to be American, I love my country, but today I am ashamed. That these things are being said as representative of me and my countrymen… it is beyond shameful. We are supposed to be better than this. Better allies, better neighbors, better humans. I am ashamed and angry that my government is representing me and my fellow Americans in this manner.

I can only say that the majority of Americans do not feel this way. Forget the propaganda you see on the news (and it is mostly propaganda). The people of this country love our northern friends, we feel for you. We don’t want to annex Canada or punish you for a natural disaster or any of this crap. We want you all to be safe. We want to help.

THAT is who we are, even if we suck at electing politicians that represent that belief.

Stay safe. Be well. We love you.

Your opinion of me is quite irrelevant.

The only thing I want people to take away from this whole thread is that there are a lot of Americans who strongly oppose Trump, who love and support Canada, and who find the current messages coming out of Washington abhorrent. It certainly doesn’t make anything better. My only hope is when you watch the news and you see the crap coming out of Washington, you keep in mind that crap is coming out of Washington and not most of the rest of the country. You have friends here.
I realize that means scant little when your country is on fire and your neighbor’s government is telling you to fuck off and threatening to tax or conquer you.

Maybe we’re just coming from two very different assumptions. You’re assuming there might be Canadians dumb enough to think all Americans are MAGA, and I’m thinking there’s no way any of us are that dumb. I’m probably being too optimistic though, so thanks for the reminder.

I think there’s a difference between logically knowing that some undefined but non zero number of Americans oppose MAGA, and actually seeing one of them stand up publicly against what the government is saying.

If anything I wish more people would do what I am doing. I would love if every time Trump says one of these bullshit things there was a loud outcry online of Americans disavowing his awful international relations.

I’ll have to agree to disagree with you there because as a Canadian who is aware that you can’t just assume everyone from a certain country can be lumped up as a whole, it comes off as annoying. But from now on, I’ll keep such opinions to myself because I now see what you’re trying to accomplish.

                Good luck out there, friend.

Go fuck yourself. You’re not “one of the good ones,” you’re a fascist enabling coward more interested in virtue signaling than going on the offense against Nazis. You’re a pants-pissing, craven (probably white) milquetoast liberal who cares more about their own relative comfort than about democracy.

It “isn’t convincing” in the same way that projecting insincerity onto someone on the internet is a lazy, cheap attack.

And no, let’s- but let’s start with the country that’s sleepwalking through their Nazi problem AND at the same time insisting that they’re “fighting.” If someone is too scared/comfortable to get off their asses and put fascists down, fine- but pretending they’re doing all they can and coming into a Canadian community trying to get credit for simply being ideologically opposed while doing nothing is fucking disingenuous as hell.

But genuine question, you say I am a fascist enabling coward who cares little about democracy.

So what would you have me do? Like, you have a single American who has never voted for or supported Trump, for such a person what does ‘caring about democracy’ look like? What might that single American say or do that would make you say ‘that person right there is no coward, that is a stand-up human being who values democracy’?

I’m asking because you say I do it wrong, I am curious what doing it right looks like?

You’re not asking what to do. You’re asking what you can do that will make other people think you’re a good guy but that doesn’t require any risk or sacrifice on your part. Then I can A) spoonfeed you an answer so you can duck responsibility by way of the “fedposting!” or “keyboard warrior” thought-stopping cliches, or I can B) be as dismissive as you deserve and listen to you get shitty and defensive. This game is so tired, kids.

From what I have seen of Trump, it is pretty clear he does not care what anyone else thinks and his vindictive as hell. So rather than writing him I think I could use my time more productively by repeatedly slamming my face in the refrigerator door. At least that way I’m less likely to end up on some sort of list.

What I do instead is vote for candidates in Congress that oppose Trump and his ideology. And spend time in online discussions like this one making it clear the American people are not in lockstep behind him.

Imagine writing an apology in 1945 as a German… So empty, it hurts. This is not something any of us want to hear about from individuals. We need to see collective, organized action against the people you put in power who are fucking up the world, not just their own backyards.

The rest of the world should be blacklisting Americans from everything: travel, services, products. Get your house in order instead of travelling the world as if you aren’t part of the parasitic problem that is America. We can’t escape your country’s lunacy, why the hell should you be able to partake in the non-shitholes the rest of us are trying to build and maintain?

Anyhoo… I get the sentiment, but so long as the only thing people like you are willing to do is write heartfelt apologies to the victims of your own administration, it’s just more fuel for the fires of hatred and resentment we feel towards you.

We’re sorry, too. It is what it is.

Yeah, another American here, I am absolutely appalled and disgusted by this, and frankly by my own countrymen broadly.

Its up to us to put a stop to this horrendous madness, and I strongly fear … we won’t be able to.

I fear the upcoming midterms will basically be stolen by Trump, and at that point shit will get even more wild… more consitutional crisis? Something approximating a balkan style civil war? Fascist crackdown? Jan 6th type bullshit, but in many locations, backed by or carried out by ICE?

Guard the Leaf, friends… Keep standing that guard.

I think it depends on what happens.

My hope is there’s a clean election and enough MAGA types get voted out that Congress can meaningfully oppose the White House.

I am concerned there will not be a clean election. That Trump will find some way to get ICE or National Guard involved in elections, that there will be reports of tampering, and a significant population will feel their votes were not properly handled. THAT is a recipe for unrest, which sadly would give Trump more excuse to use force.

I could see a situation with a dirty election, Democrats demonstrate over their votes not being counted, and either radical subgroups or agents provocateurs will become violent. And then Trump claims force is necessary to stop the ‘radical violent leftists’.

That would not be a good day.

      As do I.

And from what I can see, that fear is completely reasonable.

Not just one American sees this. There’s many of us. I fear not a majority in that regard, but many.

and I strongly fear … we won’t be able to.

Unfortunately I’m pretty sure we can’t. That’s not to say we won’t try- we will. But what happens next will largely be due to luck.

Our education system is shit. We are doing a shit job teaching kids critical thinking and analytics skills. We are doing a fucking fantastic job teaching kids that learning and research are boring and tedious activities that should be avoided when possible. Then we bathe them in a diet of short-form videos (which we’ve exported- sorry :( ) and throw them in a world where it takes two incomes just to keep the lights on. And then we expect them to take time and effort to use critical thinking in elections.
Then we act surprised when this doesn’t result in the best leaders.

Fact is for almost all elections now, the majority of people rely entirely on information ‘pushed’ to them- candidate ads, TV news, etc. Either that or they blindly support one party or another and vote for everyone that party puts forward without consideration for the individual candidate.

The result is a system heavily biased against honest candidates, at least for the Presidency.
Because you start out with the primary elections in your party, which most voters don’t participate in. That means to win the primary you have to win over the people who do vote in primaries, which are mostly wingnuts and old people. Then you have to make a mad dash for the center in order to win the general election.

Every now and then a decent human being makes it through and gets elected. But luck plays a big factor in that.

And while the immediate task might be pushing MAGA out to the fringe, really taking back the country and getting good leaders is much, much, much harder.

          Yep, well said.

I remember the… genuine glee amongst those I was with, back in college, when Obama won.

People really thought he was gonna fix everything. I was skeptical.

I was saying we needed ranked choice voting, some kind of massive overhaul to the entire Federal election system. People acted like I was speaking an alien language.

… so anyway Obama did some good, fair bit of bad, not enough to actually change the course… squandered the only possible moment where Citizens United could have been countermanded by a law he could have demanded the Dem trifecta push.

Now I contrast that moment, with the hellscape we are in, and causing globally, now.

Most of those people in that room? Went on to work for big tech firms, and more recently, get laid off.

As a people, us Americans got high on our own supply, and now things are so bad that if back then, in that room, I told them what is now happening, would happen?

They’d have not only shunned me but also actively spread rumors to ruin my reputation.

… yeah, I… I like some Americans, but generally speaking? I’m with David Bowie, I’m Afraid of Americans.

Remember that it takes many times more effort, time and money to build or fix something than it does to break things.

What Trump broke in his first term would have taken multiple terms for following administration’s to fix, assuming thwy put in constant effort.

And what he is breaking now will take even longer to fix.

Simply voting in non-republicans the next time is only the first baby step.

Always making up excuses for oneself. Always failing to see anything beyond the individual responsibility. Feeling guilty for whoever’s on the receiving end of bullying but not really doing anything to stop it.

This administration is a representation of the current state of the US population, and you’re just one more grain of dirt where it sprouts. You don’t get to opt out of this just because you know it’s fucked up.

There’s no excuses. America prides itself on government ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’. So yeah, all of use share some responsibility for this crap, whether we voted for the current government or not. I mean no excuses here.

I hope you would understand though that there are some of us who have never voted for the current government, have never supported it in any way, and in fact have always opposed it to varying degrees. That doesn’t excuse such people from a certain amount of collective responsibility as a nation. But I think that there’s a difference between ‘I voted for Trump twice and I donated to his campaign and I persuaded others to vote for him but now I regret my actions’ and ‘I never voted for him, I always opposed him, and now I oppose this’.

I don’t claim to be opt-out-able. I never voted for the guy, but I also gave him a lot more benefit of the doubt more than others, including in my online postings. My only point with this post is to disavow the current actions and statements of the government, and to say that there’s lots of Americans who love Canada and support Canada and don’t support the crap coming out of Washington.

No one needs to understand this, because everyone already knows he didn’t win by landslide. Do you think the rest of the world is stupid and uninformed? That we somehow don’t remember how close of an election it was? That we somehow don’t hear over and over the same talk about absenteeism and voter suppression? I know way more about US elections than I’d like to, just because it’s forced upon us to know what’s up with you.

there’s lots of Americans who love Canada

What you need to understand is that this is not relevant to anyone else but you. An excuse to feel better about yourself.

Not relevant. Go spend your energy on real activism.

No sympathy, please. Our elected government, voted in for a second term by Americans too God damn dumb to realize they were getting conned, erased 100 years of progress in six months. All through propaganda aimed at REAL America. Middle States, southern states, predominately white states, where more Americans live maleducated lives in poverty, working as manual labor in yesterdays industries because they weren’t afforded the luxuries of other states. The imbalance of power is wilder than I’ve ever experienced. Someone said “send help.” While some of you scoffed at this plea, or just shit all over it, I can feel the desperation. I’m about as far left as I can get without removing walls of logic. We literally have concentration camps. An SS of fuckers too scared to join the military and too fucking dumb to be cops abducting folks, while onlookers are fired upon so these fucks can protect their identities (black and latinx Americans working for ICE can suck a .22, anything white that moves in groups of 4 or more males, shoot on sight).

Uneducated Americans with generational hatred toward anything different than themselves. Their pappy’s pappy hated everything other than white straight people, and that shit gets handed down like a fucking family heirloom. I know. I had to break those chains in my family. Parents have died, other family members, formwr close friends, and I refuse to shed a tear for any of them. The first time they voted him in, I told these people I would never speak to them again. Now my friend and family circle is just me, wife, and cat, but I can also sleep well at night knowing I wasn’t a hypocrite or bending in my beliefs.

Which brings me to action. I believe I am doing as much as I can in the interest of my safety, the safety of my wife and cat, and the safety of other Americans (and nonamericans) regardless of political alignment. I struggle with self control in volatile situations. Regardless of strategy, andvance knowledge, scenario, my brain abandons logic and goes on the offensive. No flight, only fight. Never unjustly, in my opinion, at least if you consider yourself antifascist and subscribe to those beliefs.

I’ve also been to prison. I didn’t enjoy it, and although nothing bad happened to me aside from a week-long migraine, I’ll never place myself in a position where I could find myself coming out the other end locked-uo because I was fighting for my rights. Not sure what jails/prisons other Americans been in, but no bueno. Shout out to Catshit, MParker, and Texas.

So action… I want to burn it all down. I fantasize about it (and more!). The thought of certain inevitable deaths fill me with enthusiasm, fire. I don’t want to be passionate about any of this, but I am because other people living in America are cared about by shitheads like me who want nothing more than to go collectively John Wick on the likes of all of them, but unlike the MAGAts, some of us are just too wise to do anything that could fail so miserably. I’d love to go strength in numbers with all of you fellow people wanting to fight back, but where the fuck is everyone? I’m in a RED AF state. My local antifa is us. Assuming the cat isn’t a fascist piece of shit. What can I do beyond the writing, blogging, calling (might as well punch yourself in the balls twice instead), showing up? When I travel, so do my stickers, masks, and my get fucked bag. I’m unapologetically antifascist. I also hate all other Americans, including those of us too pussy or too fucking locked down in middle class purgatory with a career in a dead state, a cross species family settled into a nice single family home, just enough money to be able to afford the hottest new game eight months after it’s release on deep discount used through GameFly and still be able to eat in. Sounds like heaven, and compared to the atrocities happening around the world, I can’t complain. I also can’t march up to the granite stairs armed to the teeth like the Jan 6 fuckers. Precedent suggests I’d be DOA. We need a militia, or at least thirty middle-aged fucks like myself willing to live out our fever dreams in the name of saving democracy. I have no friends. For fucks sake, I spend time lurking here. Who you think I am?

This is unprecedented. We’re not taught shit about fascism in school. I learned on my own in college after reading books suggested by likeminded people. We don’t know what to do. Voting has been our weapon, by design by our forefathers (whom were also likely scumbag pedophiles), and now that it has been proven ineffective, we’re kinda at a loss. So we protest, peacefully until some homophobe gets butt hurt over rainbows or someshit. Then we’re persecuted, arrested, lives and careers wrecked. Unless you die a folk hero, you’re just another cow on the tracks. We have concentration camps. An SS abducting people REGARDLESS of citizenship status. Mass survelence. Unprecedented. Meanwhile, when we’re not protesting, we’re doing arts and crafts for protesting, or being wage slaves making just enough money to afford the hottest new game eight months after it comes out used through GameFly on deep discount. If you have a pet or, God forbid, a family, and you’re not making $120,000 on a cushy part-time schedule, where’s the fucking time and energy to organize and fight? We’re boned. The only way I truly see this ending is in another civil war. With all of us so integrated, it will literally be next door neighbor vs next door neighbor. We could use an intervention from abroad, but we don’t deserve one. Or at least HALF of Americans don’t deserve one. Some of us still trying to fight the good fight against literal evil, equipped with nothing but our wits. Voting was our weapon, by design by our forefathers (whom were likely also money-hungry pedophiles), but it has become sooo convoluted, the average American is probably reluctant to even participate. You should see the ballots. I’m currently working on my PhD in my late 40s, and I have to read, reread, and reread again some of the shit on these ballots. No fucking way Earl from the Creek gonna know half the words on that sumbish, let alone hit an option correctly with that pencil eraser and those meth shakes.

It’s bad. Most all of us are fucking assholes. I hate people who look like me, because people who look like me are the villains. Not defending OP per se, but maybe this was their way of expressing discontent with America as an American. I hate the post too, don’t get me wrong, but some of us are struggling with the absolute absurdity of all this, want it to end immediately, are willing to help, but haven’t a clue how aside from using the tools we were given. They could give a fuck about my 2nd ammendement rights if I roll up armed to the teeth wanting to “talk.”

Don’t give us a break, but don’t assume we’re all behind this shitshow. This can happen anywhere, and it happens fast. No political party is any better than the other, because they’re all politicians. But even the less evil side can’t get their shit together enough to combat this.

    This is long. Sorry.

ITT: people blame Americans for Trump stealing the election. We are doing our best. How about you take up a gun and go kill a politician? It’s not that easy. Don’t be a dickhead.

Take a look at any thread about Ukraine, take a look at any thread about Israel.

Americans are about to learn that they’re not immune to the generalizations.

Right. Because we’ve never been generalized about before. It’s almost like the lesson here is not to make sweeping generalizations at all?

The lesson here is that Americans are so self obsessed that they think the rest of the world still sees them as the good guys.

US election fraud is currently done through ways that can still be easily stopped if people had even two braincells to rub together. It’s not good, it’s evil shit, but not voting for Trump doesn’t even come close to clearing the bar of being a good, half-way intelligent human being. The fact that so many of them did so that the “fudge the numbers” style of fraud could work is exactly why the country can fuck itself.

They don’t even need to kill a politician, they just gotta stop signing off on the “centrist” and right-wing bullshit that keeps enabling this crap. They gotta be a little uncomfortable. We have an incredibly similar problem here where people jerk themselves off because Carney “isn’t PP” despite still being a full-blown conservative capitalist because they’re too scared to vote for anything margainally progressive. It’s embarrassing as hell how much people will immediately back down and suck boot after barely trying, if at all.

I assure you we are trying. Our election structure does not allow us to replace the executive government for another couple years. Congress, our legislative body, is the only ones that can forcibly remove a sitting President. Multiple decades of having Congressional elections ignored by voters attentions has left our Congress thoroughly dysfunctional.

So that means short of some real smoking gun there is little option for rapid change.

nah, you’re enabling them. playing by the rules is enabling them. you’re trying to wait it out without taking action. you even admit it.

things aren’t going to get better with the action currently being taken.

So what action are you suggesting? We do demonstrations and protests and letters and all that but Trump has made it very clear he does not give one single shit what other people think.

We have a Congressional election coming up later this year and it is currently expected that those who oppose Trump will win significant numbers.

Or are you suggesting forget about peaceful action within the bounds of the Constitution and go straight to armed rebellion?

Personally I would rather have the country reject Trump in elections and walk away from this whole thing with a bad taste in its mouth that would make it harder for someone like him to gain power in the future, than to have some kind of violent illegal uprising that would only strengthen Trump’s supporters.

THAT is who we are, even if we suck at electing politicians that represent that belief.

No. You’re a bunch of fucking bloodthirsty treatlerites, who kill, rape, murder and pillage the rest of the world, so that you can live like kings.

Since WWII, you’ve couped dozens of countries, killed millions of innocent civilians, and contributed to the climate crisis more than any other country in the history of the planet.

In a just world, we would have Nuremberg style trials for your leaders and military.

I pray for the collapse, dissolution, and balkanization of your country, so that the rest of the world can continue to function.

    Death to America.

I’m sad that .ml has infiltrated this post.

I pray for the collapse, dissolution, and balkanization of your country, so that the rest of the world can continue to function.

Do you realize that a balkanization of the US entails horrible conditions for the civilian population? For people who had NOTHING to do with anything? Little children?

Can’t you “pray” that the US instead, move towards being a peaceful, progressive society? A society that helps itself and the world?

Also, what exactly do you think you’re achieving by saying stuff like this? Nothing that you are wishing for is likely going to pass. The people you want punished aren’t going to be punished. All that it does is make you insufferable, and poison the entire discussion for everyone participating.

Thanks for the kind words, but I’ll be frank. Wanna help? Stop making everything about yourself (individually and as a nation), go fix your country’s broken-ass system, and come visit us and buy our stuff if you like in the meantime. If you want our trust back, figure out how the worst living caricature of America achieved the highest political office a second time, and how will you collectively prevent that from happening again? Personally, I’ll come celebrate when it happens, but that will only be the start of a generation’s worth of work to rebuild what was lost.

    Yours truly,

Canadian fed up with the constant BS from the states.

      All 100% valid.

Our problem is a lot deeper than politics. Painting with somewhat broad strokes- our education system does a shit job of teaching critical thinking and analytics, but does a great job of teaching kids that learning and research are boring and not fun and should be avoided when possible. Then we bathe these kids in a fire hose of short form videos (which we’ve exported worldwide- sorry :( ) and the result is generations of kids who don’t research anything and can’t pay attention to anything for more than 90 seconds.

The result of that is that overwhelmingly Americans get election-related information by ‘push’ channels- TV, news, advertisements. Independent research into candidates is not common. And the crap we have now is the result- not just Trump but a Congress that’s too focused on re-elections and thus has no idea how to wield power or when it should be wielded.

We’re in a bad state. It took multiple generations to get into this crap and it will take multiple generations to dig ourselves out- assuming we as a nation even have the wherewithal to realize that digging out is necessary let alone the willpower to do it. I love my country, but I’m fearful of our future, especially over the next few decades.

Honestly I worry that USA will end up like the film Idiocracy and the rest of the world will just build a giant wall around USA to keep us from screwing anything else up :(

Buddy, USA is already in full Idiocracy mode. Everyone has been watching it happen with horror for decades. Now it’s gotten so bad it’s affecting your country’s relationships with other countries. Stop posting apologies and learn how to do political activism to vote out the current fascists before it’s too late.

I believe that in every group, outsiders will see the group as represented by its loudest and most visible subgroup, unless other members of the group take steps to distance themselves from that subgroup.

Fact is, we elected the dude. We regret it (according to the latest approval polls at least) but we still elected him. And Trump / MAGA are by far the loudest and most visible subgroup of Americans, at least I assume they are to the outside. Thus, someone on the outside could reasonably assume that Trump speaks for all of the country, myself included, unless some of the rest of us stand up and say ‘he doesn’t speak for us, that isn’t our message’.

So my goal here is to do just that- even as one person, to stand up and say Trump doesn’t speak for me, his hate filled comments are NOT my message and not the message of a great many Americans. We love our northern neighbors and we have a lot more respect for you all than our leadership is showing.

You can do with that what you will. What I hope you take from it is an understanding that we do not all speak with one voice, that there are decent people in the US and we’re not just MAGA idiots and racist hicks.
