Whenever I see one of these threads, I go inside. “Removed by Mod”. 90% of the time, based on the replies and comments around it, it looks like the removed comment just said some dumb shit or was heavily disagreed with.
Why are we removing people we disagree with from the discussion? There are like eight people were had all their comments stripped from this thread. WTF is going on?
mostly because these comments are almost always racist and xenophobic
You know what, that’s fair. Its just so often! I sometimes forget that Lemmy is fringe and attracts all kinds of people, and not all of them are polite.
Removing racism and chauvinistic shit is a good thing. This isn’t a debate class.
After a while you get tired of reading “Chinese bot, Russian orc, wumao CCP shill, everyone is North Korea is dead, communists killed everyone on earth, Hamas is terrorists, Iran killed eighty trillion people in 3 days, you are a communist because you are mentally defective, vote blue no matter who.”
@RiverRock @Omnipitaph It’s probably people who don’t even have critical thinking
You have been indoctrinated with the attitude that everyone’s opinion is equal and fools must be suffered. This is a community, not a street corner.
Well yes, that is how a democracy works. If someone says something stupid, publicly, they get it kicked right back up their ass. I’d rather participate in kicking the stupid back up a person’s ass than wade through pages of a one-way conversation. Maybe that’s just me.
Depends on which instance is doing the removing but around here it’s usually just racism and orientalism getting removed on this kind of post.
To be fair none of these countries is socialist or even communist. And we hardly have accurate statistics about north Korea. Not that I disagree with the underlying point.
Both countries are run by ML parties following revolution and would therefore be designated both socialist and communist based on like 100 years of precedent.
The WPK is Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist, technically, though ML is accepted as the basis of Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism, just with the juche idea added on top.
Both China and the DPRK are socialist countries. Public ownership is the principal aspect of their economies, and the working classes control the state.
the working classes control the state
X to doubt.
Doubt all you like, but both the WPK and CPC are overwhelmingly proletarian parties in states where the commanding heights and backbone of the economy are publicly owned at a minimum.
Public ownership + a proletarian ruling party ≠ the working class controls the state.
State ownership is not automatically worker control. Even if a ruling party genuinely represents the working class, that does not by itself establish that ordinary workers possess meaningful power over the state or over the party leadership.
to be fair, you should spend some time actually learning what socialism is before forming opinions
I did but i would be genuinely interested what you mean. Maybe I should have frased it as genuinely socialist or fully socialist I admit that.
Socialism is a transitional state between capitalism and communism, where the working class holds power in society but existing social relations have not been abolished. This is precisely what you have in China and DPRK. Both are genuinely socialist.
But you dont understand, chyna and norse korea dont alliw their people to killthemselves, unlike capitalist paradises where you are free to kill yourself see. Also china and korea kill their own people at the same time so checkmate commie!
So fake lol

They’re under reported. Just like COVID deaths. Just like all health information in China, there is no way to get the data honestly most people basically rely on hand counting. China’s number one goal is information control and always has been.
It’s the whole “there are no homosexuals in Iran” crap.
Neither source seems to point towards fudged numbers, more towards an increase in suicides as a societal issue to be tackled. Nobody said there’s no suicide in China.
Its similar to rape, its rampant in much of the developing world, but it goes severely underreported due to lack of government recognition and societal pressure.
They do. The important part of both is they mention there is no real list or hub or information to draw this from. Any other country that tracks suicide rates fits into roughly an even distribution alongside other factors like population density and food scarcity. China looks different because their data is completely wrong and disingenuous.
China does not track this information for that specific purpose. You cannot get health information from China. They have done this with AIDS and COVID. Instead of facing an issue, they fudge the numbers.
China is not an outlier, it is simply a liar
Is this the data you’re looking for? I don’t have a voice in this argument, I just thought the idea that you can’t look this stuff up is interesting, so I did a single Google search. Sorry if this isn’t helpful.
https://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/doi/10.46234/ccdcw2023.109
I’d need to see evidence of this, all you’ve done is list suspicions.
Well it isn’t my job to teach you history. China has a full history of information control especially around healthcare. A culture around denying suicide and a political interest in showing themselves to be better than they actually are.
If you choose to embrace a lack of information as truth, that is you.
All countries have a political interest in showing themselves as better, though. I’m aware enough of China’s history to know that your allegations are just that, allegations.
when google is blocked at the troll farm
Because North Korean reporting is SO TRUSTWORTHY 🤣
What about reporting from the DPRK makes it inherently less trustworthy?
but pedo oligarch owned media told them not to trust DPRK media, and pedo oligarchs would never lie
Oh silly me, duh
It would be great to have the complete unit of measure displayed here. It’s suicides per 100k capita. Does not change the relative proportions, but is needed for the full picture.
China is just bribing people to continue living by providing material improvements to their quality of life. That’s cheating 😤
You can’t get a good stat out of China with a team of #10 oxen and a super-sayan pushing. If you trust what the party is selling, I have some AWESOME beachfront real estate you will absolutely love at a bargain basement price.
I’m afraid my brain is just too wrinkly to allow facts and evidence to just slide off it and just imagine that reality is whatever I feel like based on absolutely nothing, like you can.
Genuine question, is North Korea considered a monarchy (or monarcho-socialist), considering the Kim family has ruled it uncontested for generations? I know that a lot of stuff you read about North Korea in mainstream news is misinformation/propaganda so I’m curious
No, every political position held by members of the Kim family is open to anyone else. They don’t have a competition based electoral system, and instead do consensus building before approval voting.
“Consensus building” is that what they call disappearing political opponents now?
I know, it not only that.
No?
Imo it is just a monarchy with a red coat of paint, complete with castes and borderline feudalism. Having said that I do think NK would likely chill out quite a bit if it was left alone to its own devices.
source: cryptic symbolism in my dreams
but seriously: are the bougies paying you a commission to go around spewing bullshit, or you just enjoy running your mouth about places you know less than nothing about?
No I’ve read extensively about how the DPRK works. I stand by what I said before I had the KGB man coming around to bash it with a heavy object.
sure thing bud
☝️🤓
where is this caste you speak of? As someone who comes from the country that invented the caste system, I’ve never heard of castes in DPRK
complete with castes and borderline feudalism
Just making shit up whole cloth
It is not a monarchy. The Kims served all kinds of different positions. In fact the position of the president was abolished and split into 3 different posts to deconcentrate power when Kim Il Sung died (hence he’s called the eternal president).
The highest organ of state power in DPRK is the Supreme People’s Assembly (over 600 members) which is elected for five year terms in universal and secret ballot, and it is the body which in general appoints all other individial posts. So Kim Jong Un is for example appointed as the Chairman of the State Affairs Commission whereas the Chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly is Pak Thae Song.
Kim Jong Un is also the General Secretary of the Worker’s Party of Korea, but that’s not a State Organ.
The title of the “Leader” you might have heard so much is mostly a customary one and what it entails is a lot of inspecting of construction sites and workplaces and giving suggestions on how the design can be improved to serve the people better.
Most often he is referred to simply as Comrade Kim Jong Un by the state media.
Is it more like nepotism in favor of the Kim family then? Or do they genuinely earn these positions? How is General Secretary of the WPK not a state organ if the WPK is the leading and only party in the DPRK?
I’m not an expert on DPRK history, so instead I’ll try and speak to the prominence of the Kims:
Think back to the enormous popularity the Kennedy family enjoyed in the US for decades. For a good thirty years, if you had a guy named Kennedy on your ticket, he was gonna win. Even Capcom, as recently as 2004, named their heroic American protagonist Leon S Kennedy, because the association of “Kennedy” with “Heroic/good/representative of America’s better angels” was strong in pop culture. It’s an incorrect association, but what matters is it existed.
But what did John, the one people remember most fondly, actually do to earn his reputation? Give a couple well-received speeches, have sex with a trafficked actress, propose a drawdown in Vietnam that never happened, and then get his shit blown smoove off? That’s not much of a legacy when you put it on paper, but here in America our standards are very low. with that in mind, let’s imagine a different history:
The Nazis win WW2. Doesn’t matter how, they just do. After cannibalizing Europe to rebuild their military, they cross the Atlantic with a massive fleet and start systematically dismantling the United Stated via carpet bombing. First electricity goes, then water, then food as every farm, dam and railway is destroyed. After all the infrastructure is gone they start leveling apartment blocks and houses, and entire towns are wiped off the map with few survivors every night. The bombers never stop coming, hitting even ruins where people might be hiding, scouring nearby forests with incendiaries, and allegedly (though I believe it) dropping viral and bacterial weapons with knowledge given to them by Japanese war criminals. Somewhere between one fifth and one quarter of the population is dead, every single building has been leveled, and the traumatized survivors are hiding in caves. At this moment John F Kennedy shows up, pushes the Nazis out of the northern US states with help from Canada, and organizes the rebuilding of the liberated states. When the Nazis consolidate their hold on the southern states and create a military puppet state there to serve as a foothold, he oversees preparations to drive them back again. Obviously he becomes an instant folk hero, and his descendants both enjoy great political goodwill by association and experience great pressure to live up to the accomplishments of their fathers. //End hypothetical
In the US, a place that has not been touched by war in living memory, we very easily fall into the trap of thinking of other peoples as somehow sillier and more emotional, or more prone to irrational thinking. This is the message that our corporate media has always given us, through careful implication, picture choice, orientalist framing. The unspoken message is always: look at the latest inscrutable conflict these primitives have gotten themselves embroiled in now, aren’t you glad to live somewhere civilized where rule of law prevails?
Of course, the truth is that we export our instability: more than that, our stability depends on constantly destabilizing others and collapsing entire societies into nightmares from which can be easily siphoned cheap labor and resources. “Our” prosperity (mostly the prosperity of the capitalist class, but we do still get the crumbs) is inextricable from their suffering, it depends on it. If other societies are able to stand up for themselves, they can’t be threatened into extortionate “free trade” deals that let western corpos make an insane markup on some tv assembled with rare earth minerals from Vassal Country A by wage slaves in Vassal Country B. That sounds random but it has to be stressed that almost every supply chain for everything in the entire “first world” is built on that relationship, all the profitability of western companies is built on that relationship, and they have before and will again kill untold millions if that relationship is ever threatened.
To tie it all together, my thesis about the apparent popularity of the Kim family (and I say apparent because I can’t know for sure from outside the DPRK either way, but haven’t seen any signs of internal struggles, which you know our western press would pounce on) is this:
-The US and it’s co-belligerents visit an untold amount of conflict and misery on the global south as a matter of course -Those who stand up to them are remembered fondly, especially if they succeed, especially if they succeed and survive to old age -Those who stand up are demonized in the western press, especially if they succeed, especially if they succeed and survive to old age -The people we in the US are conditioned to view as lesser are if anything much more level headed on average than we are, and if the armageddon we made over there happened to us over here the result would probably look less like a socialist republic and more like a loose confederation of death cults -With this in mind, and knowing that they aren’t actually central to the government of the country, I cannot possibly begrudge Korean society their affinity for the Kim family as a national symbol
The WPK is not the only party in Korea, there’s also Chondoist Chongu Party and Korean Social Democratic Party, you can also be elected a representative without party association.
All elected positions are subject to recall and that right is regularly exercised, being a member of Kim family certainly does not give you immunity to that.
On the more philosophical questions, I can recommend Roland Boer’s Socialism in Power, specifically Chapter 7 talks about Korea.
If you trust these numbers, you’re a fool.
Why? They are from both WHO and CDC. Instead of spewing shit, you really should check the sources first lol.
It’s true, they’re likely far higher in occupied province of Taiwan and occupied Korea.
Oh look it’s you. I should have known, China’s #1 Lemmy propagandist.
mald harder lib
Work on your technique , Xi’s balls are getting fragile with age.
How does it feel every time your freeze peach is taken away by the evil tankies
TIL China has lower suicide rates than nearly all other developed countries. Honestly thought they’d be higher.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate
…and you believe the stats they publish?!?
That is a damn awesome result in just 30 years.
In the 90s it was 3 times as much, so the change is incredible.
It is also understandable how they succeeded in that - majority of suicides were young women in rural hukou. With urbanization progress, improvements to standard of living, with having options, just young women suicides dropped 90% (source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6775931/).
Reminds me of when there were no homosexuals in Iran 😆
It doesn’t matter which country I live in, I will still want to not exist on earth.
the moon?
You dummy, the reason people don’t commit suicide in aUThOriTAiaN StAtEs because the government would murder them for it.
When you commit suicide there they just call in juche necromancer, resurrect you, give you a poetry book and armed guard yell at you “START WRITING” all the time.
Reminds me of Death & Taxes (I don’t know the game aside from this song)
One of those posts where people who know nothing but have opinions they must speak come together to enlighten the poor tankies. Can we at least drop the white saviour mentality this time guys?
Impossible.
Inb4 “no but they’re commies so they must be lying”
Communism has nothing to do with why China and North Korea are lying. That’s the facism.
Neither China nor the DPRK are fascist, are you saying fascists lie about China and the DPRK? I agree, that definitely happens.
