I’ve never understood why people think that. Most of what comes out of his mouth makes absolutely no sense. If I was to act completely impartial, and forget everything I know about the monster, listening to him wouldn’t make me think “What a charismatic guy”. I think you’re 100% correct that it’s used car salesman energy. His base doesn’t understand what he’s saying (because he makes no sense), but they can cherry-pick parts they understood and craft positions that they agree with over them. They hear what they want to in an overly confident energetic way. It’s why they think he “says it like it is,” even though he just vomits words.
A lot of the rural Trump voters I know had made being uneducated a key pillar of their personal identity even before 2015. Those are the people who think he’s a charismatic speaker.
The urban and suburban ones held their noses and voted for him because “at least he’s not a Godless Democrat.” They don’t listen to what he says, but they vote for him anyway.
