this may be the one, mastodon is mature and lemmy 1.0 is almost out… but I fear we may need lemmy 1.1 for it to actually be a good experience, since 1.0 is such a big breaking change.

reddit is killing anonymous access to old.reddit. users from certain countries were asked to verify their identity.

There will always be one more thing.

Every time it happens, the stream of people becomes less … pleasant on average. Not to say there aren’t still good people that might come over, but the people that come at this point are pretty accepting of toxicity and are more likely to spread it.

      Good to know!

Personally, for the most part I left Reddit even before the Lemmy exodus. But this was the final straw. Since then, full time Lemmy.

Only if the affected users know about the existence of lemmy, and many of them likely do not. If you happen to still be using reddit, you should use it to shill lemmy, hopefully in a diversity of subreddits so that lemmy doesn’t become any more of an echo chamber than it already is.

Problem here is it relies on people using redit after having found lemmy. I know some people do, but I can only imagine it’s a one-way valve for most.

It’ll be both good and bad if it happens.

While it’ll be great for the threadiverse to have more growth it will inevitably put us in the crosshairs of bot farms and AI data farmers.

Also, recently they require you to login to access old reddit where previously you could browse without logging in. They do not require a valid email address (yet) to create an account, so while not a total crap show, it is rapidly approaching.
This change is what led me to do a search for alternatives to reddit in which Lemmy here was suggested.

i’ve started recommending feddit.org (my lemmy instance) to people that i know irl, but the difficulty is the content: too much politics (especially trump and others), and not enough shitpost.

Be mindful that that is a Germany-based right-wingoid cesspit that supports and excuses the Israel genocide of Palestinians, all under the guise that “legally they can’t ever be as evil as us, the Nazis”.

Infinite scroll + influencer slop + real world news = crabs in a bucket.

They can’t stand to not be able to see each other’s favorite reels and react back. If it weren’t so rotted and full of spyware it would be a laudable way to stay in connected. I consider it the empty calories of friendship.

I can get out of lemmy what I got out of reddit a long time ago. It only takes a few hundred smart/funny people to make a chat board good. We’re here now. Hopefully some of the niche communities get ported over soon enough, but the real greatness of reddit was that it was mostly uncensored and intelligent opinion. That’s mostly dead.

Only in some communities it was…

And, the lack of censorship wasn’t a good thing. It allowed absolute shtshow’s like thedonald or fatpeoplehate to exist way too long. There were also numerous pedo subreddits too which were allowed to exist apparently.

I’d argue that Reddit is at least partially responsible for a lot of f’ed up shit that many countries are now facing, by empowering those weirdos

The problem with reddit very specifically is that it was, in many ways, internet counterculture. It grabbed a very specific demographic which is much less likely to be active on Facebook - young men stepping out from their edgy teenager “it’s not a stage mom” stage, and into the throes of early adulthood. So now you have this very strange thing where “youth counterculture” is sometimes (often enough to be a problem) this unholy marriage between fascist nihilism and Christian nationalism.

            Absolutely true

In fact, here in Australia, someone has now introduced legislation in parliament to force social media companies to provide a feed without the algorithm / only posts by people you subscribe to

Of course the right wing nut jobs don’t like the legislation, because they rely on scare mongering and rage bait to exist

That’s why you know it’s great legislation
