Donald Trump’s bruising return to the White House has sent many longtime foreign allies scrambling to get their distance, and according to a new piece from The Atlantic, that distance will last long after Trump is gone.
Trump’s second term as president has been marked by notable and widespread disrespect toward nations once seen as close U.S. allies. Between his attempts to level massive tariffs against nearly every nation in the world and his frequent breaches of diplomatic norms, Trump has created a hostile global environment in which allies no longer feel safe trusting in the stability of the U.S.
In a new piece for The Atlantic on Tuesday, staff writer Vivian Salama argued that this new dynamic, in which the nations of the world are working to establish a safe distance from the U.S., is bound to become the new normal for years to come, even after Trump leaves office and is potentially replaced by a more traditional, dependable administration.
This is what Putin wants to see.
America is on Putin’s side, though. When America is weakened, so is Putin.
While the United States is currently on Vladimir Putin’s side, Vladimir Putin has never been on the United States’.
Putin would have benefited had he never attacked Ukraine. Now he’s impotent.
It’s what the Trump’s want to see too, families tend to have similar values – and Jr just married a Russian plant from Putin’s circle, wedding paid for by her dear russian oligarch buddy. It’s also what the majority of Americans want to see, based on how they voted.
Only like 1/5th of Americans voted for Trump. The problem is more that people stayed home. It’s disillusionment with the system and a lot of voter suppression, MAGA isn’t actually that popular. Which makes the Democratic loss even more embarrassing
Chaos in the West is a net positive for pretty much everyone else that is subjugated by it. I don’t even know if Putin is necessarily for it, even if aspects of it are certainly beneficial to his reign, but I can tell you everyone with a brain in the global South cheers whenever the empire shoots itself in the foot. And no, it’s not because of Putin, it’s because the culture itself is based around might makes right and feeding on others… but if others can fight against it, then it’ll have to feed on itself.
Putin absolutely is for Chaos in the ‘West’, whatever that even means.
Russian strategy has for decades been to support extreme parties on every end of the societal spectrum within European countries and the US. For example Russia was/is a major supporter of the german right wing afd and the BSW, a fringe left wing party.
And the rise of fascism in the West is a net positive for everyone? Seriously?
And talking about ‘Western’ Culture is ridiculous anyway, it’s like talking about ‘asian’ culture.
Puton is busy hiding from zelensky, nobody’s scared of putin no more buddy. Can’t use that boogeyman anymore.
All that post-WWII goodwill … Gone.
And the bad guys in WWII seem to be making a bit of a comeback
And you won’t believe their stance on Israel!
I don’t get it. This is an article about an article. Why not just link the original article published by the Atlantic?
Because people don’t actually read anything anymore, besides the title. You’re a rare breed my friend.
I first heard about it via AlterNet, and you need a subscription for The Atlantic.
Russia finally winning the cold war ig
This is the real bottom line. MAGA seems to think that Russia is on their team.
You deserve it for by ing an evil empire
I voted blue and donated to contested races as much as I could afford. I am too lazy/socially anxious to canvass or do anything active like that. In my bubble, there was plenty of Kamala hype and even though I didn’t believe it, all I could do was ask anonymous online strangers to vote and hope enough of them voted my way. I shouldn’t have been surprised at the power of racism and sexism in the country but it was still a shock to the system. In my circles supporting him was utterly unthinkable so I have no explanation on how it happened.
For Europe, it’s a long overdue reality check that we were way to dependent on the US for defense.
This is not what Trump intended, so he does not get credit for that from me but there are benefits.
Defense, computing, electronic payments…
Not only defense. Software!
Right? Thanks for massive Linux and renewable energy adoption , moron hahahaha.
I’ll take a faint glimmer of silver lining there.
I agree… we just fall behind. Comfort is never a good thing for progress.
US soft power is gone like an orange pedo fart.
Based on reliable reporting from the WH, those farts are anything but gone… I’m afraid the next president will have to replace all the furniture, all the carpets, curtains, and the paintings will need to be decontaminated too.
the available evidence shows that those actually hang around for a while
“You are such a piece of shit! So… did you send that check? Thanks, jerk. See you tomorrow. Love you, too. No, you hang up! Bye. Hang up!”
Permanent? Nothing is fucking permanent.
Long lasting, ok sure, but it’s really hard to know what that would mean.
At least the next two years, maybe six years? Definitely.
Death to America.
The US flushed a century of building soft power in 18 months.
Everytime someone says something is too big to fail, I remind myself that failure is often a catastrophic series of events that occur because the leadup was ignored all the way.
The world is moving to a new paradigm where China and India, allied with South American and smaller Asian countries, run the world. The US will never return to prominence.

Mmmm yesss your arrogance is delicious
Foreign officials say Trump has sent US allies running — and it’s permanent
no it’s not.
let’s be completely honest here. the US is in the news because we have an asshole for a president that outwardly wears his corruption. he doesn’t have enough mental capacity to not say the bad thing out loud.
but make no mistake, almost all world leaders are inwardly pieces of shit. all this posturing will be forgotten the moment a mentally capable leader replaces that bag of shit.
I’m not saying this out of righteous smug indignation. I’m saying it because it happens all the time and it’s the truth.

This is classic what-aboutism at it’s finest. This discussion is not about “Trump bad. Everyone else good!”
it’s literally in the headline!
No, it isn’t. The headline talks about how Trump has soured the US’s relationship with other countries.
It’s possible to make that statement without outright saying “Trump bad!”
No, he’s right. Trump is good optics for murderous white supremacists/bootlicking imperialist vassals in the US and abroad, but not for everyone else. Obama had record bombings, he was just charismatic, looked and talked non rapey and at least pretended to be moral (whilst continuing the imperialistic goals). Anyone distancing from Trump or calling him out is not necessarily doing it due to morality, it can just be convenient for their own power grabbing goals.
Trump is just handling the dismantling of America more than previous presidents, he certainly is the man for the job, and Americans are feeling a small percentage of the pain felt by everyone else inflicted by Burgerland (because, as other countries unite and grow and develop nukes and stuff, the Western elite has to pivot and feed on the local stock) whilst he’s in power and they don’t like it. But things haven’t gotten crazier or more evil, the targets are just changing.
I guess you missed the point also.
Disagree. International relationships take a lot of time and resources to create. Structures are being built now in order to circumvent the US, and those won’t just disappear when we elect a new president. Yeah maybe they’ll let us back at the table once Trump is gone, but we won’t be at the head of the table anymore. The rest of the world is figuring out how to function without the US right now. If they succeed, our participation will be irrelevant, which by definition diminishes most of our economic power.
Nothing is permanent in international relations. Nations have permanent interests, not permanent allies.
Yes, but governments usually try to plan for outcomes that last more than 4 years. As it is now, the second a rational president is in place starts a timer counting down to a completely unknown situation. Who would want to take a risk on that? This leaves you with allies who are only there now, because they know thats all they can rely on. And if they aren’t rewarded immediately, in political terms, they won’t bother, either.
Revoke his citizenship and send him to The Hague.
Goodbye Washington.
Because it’s not trump.
The whole damned US framework facilitated this little shitheel. And its shown you are not to be trusted, and unfit to operate on an international stage
That’s the thing. I hear Americans saying to not blame them, this is all Trump.
Not so fast. The entire US government is failing from the middle out. Sure, Trump is an idiot manchild, but the entire US government is supporting him. The GOP fights dirty and don’t care about laws while the democrats completely stopped playing the game and sit on their hands. The citizens elected Trump twice, almost three times, and keep electing the other people around him supporting his insanity or unwilling to fight it.
The majority of US citizens wanted this to happen or allowed it to happen.
Generations of propaganda and lies, the dumbing down of the population combined with arrogance and hubris have accelerated the downfall of an empire whose only current goal is to extract all the wealth from the population.
The majority of US citizens wanted this to happen or allowed it to happen.
A big aspect that gets ignored.
This is the second time Americans allowed Trump into office. If they can’t be bothered to walk across the street to vote, they can’t claim Trump doesn’t represent all Americans.
I’m tired of all this winning.
