I agree that the glazing on here is out of control - I got multiple downvotes and replies (one of which I’m pretty sure was LLM generated) on another thread for defending the use of the term “slop” to refer to chatbot output. It’s honestly making me a little suspicious - apparently one of the mods here is big on AI hype.

Sure seems like it, based on the length, use of bullet points, and general style/tone… Anyway, I don’t think that “slop” implies any “objective standard of quality”. It’s a subjective term for any lazy, derivative work. Not all slop is AI output, but all AI output claiming to be “art” is slop.

The more I look at just the second image the more it falls apart. The stars on their hats look like something a kindergartner drew and are, inexplicably, beige with a tiny red border. You know that famous symbol of our cause, the beige star? The AK on the right has random holes all over the handguard that make no sense, and both girls have mismatched collar tabs. The hamsicks on their coats are mostly right, in sharp contrast to the one on the flag, which, again, looks drawn by a kindergartner - that really was the most important one to get right. I’ve been online for longer than some people on this site have been alive, and I’ve seen a good deal of digital art, both good and bad. This doesn’t even hold a candle to the likes of Tim Buckley and Andrew Dobson. So, while I appreciate the intent behind these images, I am still rating them Slop/10.

Even OpenAI admits their models spit out garbage up to 50% of the time. Personally, I have yet to see any “art” or “music” generated by LLMs that has any merit as such. How is “slop” not an entirely appropriate term for these results? I’m a little more open minded on this issue than I used to be, but I’m still not convinced that AI has any actual use-case for the “average consumer”. Yes, the discourse is exhausting, regardless of where you fall, because it’s been astro-turfed to hell by the snake oil merchants who run the major US tech companies. Given their record, I think some level of skepticism is healthy, a lot of what I’ve seen on hear is just people arguing over “how much” skepticism is warranted. I was quite a skeptic myself, but there was a good post in on here in technology, from the DeepSeek kernel engineer, that explained a lot about why the tech is useful.

I can’t tell from looking at it whether it’s supposed to be eyeliner or smile lines around the eyes. Given that the rest of the stick figures are pretty gender-neutral and there’s nothing else that could be considered “feminine” about this one, I would assume the latter.
