Tesseract the Lemmy app is gone.

https://github.com/asimons04/tesseract now returns a 404, it appears it has been deleted or made private following the ongoing debacle of the various ways it blocked instances, accounts and sentences.

Amusingly, in the meantime the other Tesseract, the Matrix client, is unaffected as it does not appear to contain mechanisms to shadowban users etc. You know, like a normal decentralised network client application :)

Honestly, that sucks. Countless hours of voluntary development down to the drain due to some extraordinarily dumb and absolutely avoidable decision to setup and curate this ridoculous fucking list and not be explicit about it.

Like, fuck dude, it’s your app, you are entitled to your own shitty gimmicks, everyone has their own, just be upfront with them.

Have the guy even addressed the whole drama anyhow? Aside from oblitering the whole thing on a whim.

I swear every Lemmy dev has tried to control what people are allowed to see and interact with.

    • I’m sure you’re not gonna see this since I am on your weird blocklist but to address

Just don’t be a violent asshat or militantly political

I’m gonna copy a comment from hexbear:

This only ever applies to leftists or people in the global south. Argue in favor of invading Iran? Support Israel? Support banning abortion? Want to make homelessness a crime? These are all totally neutral opinions that totally don’t involve the use of violence.

Say “It’s really funny Charlie Kirk got clipped after he stated a few gun deaths (resulting from rightwing terrorists shooting up an elementary school) each year is the price of freedom” and it’s “OMG I CAN’T BELIEVE THE HEXBEANIS ADVOCATES VIOLENCE!!!”

To hear Kwame Ture say it:

Should I have been more upfront about it? Not really.

at least now that the cat’s out of the bag, I can advertise it as a proper feature

Some people have zero self awareness. Everyone who isn’t you reads this and sees that you know you were sneaking around and now that you’re caught you’re gonna pretend you are proud of what you did. No one else is proud… It was a very weird thing to do.

I cannot speak for anyone else but it doesn’t piss me off that you did this. I mean, this is a niche platform and yours is a niche client for it.

It’s again, deeply weird. The entire appeal of this place is that moderation is done by people you can choose not to associate with, but you got off on a weird power trip, creating a hidden list of those you’d prefer to subject to secret, additional moderation. Weird man, just go back to reddit. Unless of course you got banned? That thing you claim everyone on your little list did too. But I’m sure yours was an unjust ban, and all of theirs were just. Sure.

Do you think more than like 5 dudes are gonna want to use your frontend after this? I’m doubting it. I guess it’s a software “portfolio piece” for you, but that’s about it. Just hope your potential employers you show it to are the “normies” you’re so fond of.

Right, us queer folks and brown folks need to just shut the fuck up and take our bullets, right?

The craziest thing is that you don’t even realize that you are the one perpetuating toxicity and violence with this behavior. If you had a gram of shame in you, its weight would crush your soul.

What balls. To think you could just secretly decide, for other people, what they should and should not be able to see and look at. To become a phantom censor of the Internet.

This is greater an offense than ANYTHING you could find in any post I’ve made.

No one cares about your dodgy self justifying rambles, mate.

You decided to shovel decisions that were not yours to make. You were literally dictating to the users and you went to great lengths to hide it.

    • Admiral Patrick’s step by step process of building a nicer fediverse:

      1. Call folks on his ban list “a wall of angry, violent people [you need to get past] to get to your cats, comics, or hobbies”
      2. Be sure to ban all the violent extremist trans folks at Blahaj
      3. Have a tantrum about how another admin is having a tantrum
      4. Invent a cult of personality around your opponent to explain why people agree with their opinion on this topic: “His userbase of malcontents jerk off his ego in the comments while adding yet more speculation, rumors, and the like.”
      5. Double down on the accusations about Blahaj, because fuck the trans instance if they don’t align with a PG moderation policy
      6. Wreck your whole repository to prevent it being forked normally, because its MY PRECIOUS AND YOU CAN’T HAVE IT!
      7. Continue to live peacefully in your PG bubble along with everyone else who didn’t realise they were also in your bubble. Life is good :)

I saw one GitHub issue regarding the block list with two people asking about it, and you asking them to wait for your official statement. It was 7 hours old at the time and the only issue regarding the block list.

It’s entirely possible you started getting further harassed after I saw it and made my own comment about it as evidence you were aware that people found the block list.

If so, I’m sorry. But if not, one issue with two comments is hardly harassment.

I expect you’ll say you have better things to do and don’t owe the peanut gallery a damn thing, but if you care at all about reputation on the fediverse (which I’d suggest will have large ramifications on the success of your plans to try and make it more friendly) then you should take a few moments to make some screenshots of this harassment as receipts.

Currently the terrible harassing assholes have a lot of receipts backing their statements up and all you have is your words.

    • Am I blocking anyone based on any ideology? Nope! Just don’t be a violent asshat or militantly political or perpetually hostile otherwise act in ways that would drive away normies. That’s it.

Like, I get that you don’t like being exposed to anyone who cares about anything, but at least be honest with yourself that you are indeed blocking based on ideology- seemingly the presence of any ideology(aside from the dominant cultural ideologies you are apparently unaware of). It’s totally cool for you to not want to be challenged in your beliefs in any way, but foisting your ideology on others without their knowledge is pretty messed up and the fact that you can’t see why that bothers people is kind of pathetic.

Their statement is also self-contradictory, since violence is a part of many ideologies. So, if they block people based on any violence, they will necessarily be blocking people based on ideologies.

Not trying to make much of a point beyond that, but I have a hard time trusting people whose beliefs and actions seem to be based off of illogical nonsense.

Should I have been more upfront about it? Not really.

As someone who’s used Tesseract for years, it would’ve been nice. You said elsewhere that no one else had complained but I had no idea what was going on. I use Voyager on my phone and I had notifications showing up there that were absent in Tesseract. I had comments I’d made from my phone that I couldn’t see from my browser. And, like, comments about the World Cup. Does Tesseract hate football? Sports in general? I had no idea that there was a new semi-secret blocklist and that someone else in that comment chain had committed some unknown-to-me sin elsewhere so I couldn’t continue that discussion with others from my laptop. I ended up keeping a second Lemmy-UI tab open because, as much as I love it, I couldn’t trust Tesseract until this mysterious problem was resolved. Not a great experience.

We can all disagree about the seriousness but a former Anarchist Nexus admin did ban a world admin from a community for being a Zionist, while that admin was sporting a display name calling for death to all Zionists. Then the world admin threw a complete shitfit and tried to get everyone and their grandma to defed nexus and db0, while nexus and db0 handled things respectfully all things considered.

I’ve got no sympathy for the world admin. Especially considering all the drama that they started. It’s all been discussed to fucking death and I’m not trying to re-open that shit.

But could we please call it out as the exaggeration the statement is rather than just bluntly calling it a lie and saying nothing more? Wording it that way carries the implication to people unaware that you’re saying Patrick made it up whole cloth rather than exaggerating and misrepresenting.

        • I called it a lie because it’s misleading and inaccurate, but I didn’t want to re-litigate the whole thing either. But I get your point.

The first inaccuracy is highlighted below:

In the same light as #1, I don’t know which admin it was, but after the dbzer0/nexus admins were calling for one of LW’s admins to be murdered, one of the blahaj admins endorsed .nexus and had the gall to call it “well moderated”. That endorsement from blahaj was NOT present prior to that incident. Again, not sure which admin that was, but only admins can issue endorsements, so it was one of them.

It was one admin involved, who was only an admin on anarchist nexus. And that admin immediately stepped down to keep the peace. But the way he says it, there’s a clear implication multiple admins across both instances were involved in the so-called “death threat”.

The second inaccuracy is as you have described. It should never have been characterised as a “death threat” in the first place, and imo no reasonable person could conclude otherwise.

Both Ada and CupcakeZealot (Jessica I think?) continuously look the other way when any blahaj users call for violence.

Even if I wanted to leave calls to violence up, I wouldn’t, because they put our whole instance at risk of a takedown from our hosting provider.

So I can say to you genuinely, that I struggle to understand this take.

The only thing I can think is that you are equating people being ok with punching Nazis and people making memes when a transphobe dies as being calls to violence. If those are what you mean by calls to violence, then yeah, I guess I’m guilty as charged. I would say to you though, that blocking a trans instance for not responding to transphobia in a way that you personally agree with is in poor taste.

Ok, this sounds like you’re talking about fediseer.

.nexus had an admin with a byline calling for “death to zionists”. When called out, rather damage their community and risk defederation that would impact their user base, the admin in question stepped down.

That’s what good moderation looks like.

Despite the admin in question stepping down, there was still a push from several large instances to defederate .nexus over the events. We then endorsed them on fediseer to show solidarity with them in response to the ongoing calls to defederate them, because they did the right thing by their community and were still being dragged over the coals for it.

Should I have been more upfront about it? Not really. Would have had the same reaction. At least this way I had some time to prepare for it because I knew it would happen eventually.

Were you promoting Tesseract as a generic Lemmy frontend for normal instances to use? Because if so, including a hidden, unmodifiable (without forking) blocklist curated by a single person without any oversight or system of remediation seems… ill-advised.

Implementing those rules on your own instance is one thing. Forcing other admins to (unknowingly) enforce your personal opinion on who should have a voice in the Fediverse is another thing entirely. And hiding it just makes the optics many times worse.

This is the kind of shit tech bros like Musk do on their platforms because they see themselves as kings of their domain. I bet you’re still using Tesseract and can’t even see this, asshole.

It’s funny you picked Admiral Patrick as a username since the character was a right bastard who wanted to unilaterally surrender the Federation to the Dominion. Leave Lemmy and go haunt some other community that shares your values. r/conservative should be right up your alley. If by chance you see this and reply with some stupid “high road” remark just know that whatever you say will be regarded about as much as a stepped on turd.

Basically I was just banking on people not noticing until they’ve already had some kind of feeling that “Lemmy just feels more friendly lately” and putting two and two together when realizing why.

You took it upon yourself to make a decision for thousands of users without their knowledge and consent. That is far more problematic than any of the reasons why you created the block list in the first place or why you hid it.

When you offer something up to the internet, especially too a gitrepo where a lot of software is FOSS, just like when you offer something up on any public forum, you can expect that most people will take things at face value. You deliberately took advantage of that to progress your own agenda and ideology.

The people talking in these comments about using your product and thinking they were doing something wrong should be enough to illustrate time, and work, and irritation that they put into this because you couldn’t be up front.

If nobody by you used your front end, would that have been so bad?

The fact that you never intended the list to go public is absolutely damning. I trust instance admins to moderate and necessarily hide certain types of content from my view, but that’s an agreement I consent to when I join the instance and can verify if I really want to. I do not expect a client to do this moderation, especially not when the repo says nothing about what it’s doing.

It’s almost like you knew nobody would want to use your software if you were honest and transparent about what it was. You want to create this “nice little fediverse,” but were also likely aware that most of the people you wanted to influence would never sign up through your instance or even use your biased client. To some extent I get this desire to influence the discourse in some way. It’s what I usually do on my blahaj.zone main, fostering positive community through leading by example and moderating directly. However, I would never dream of moderating without transparency, or trying to win over people through deception for that matter.

As someone who was raised ideologically liberal I don’t know where you got the idea that making decisions for others without their consent is ok. The main reason I walked away from that ideology wasn’t because my principles changed, but because I felt like the main advocates of it really didn’t stand by them. It’s the same reason why I don’t like tankies; they give their states a pass for directly compromising their own values. When liberals on the fedi act even more authoritarian than the open Marxist-Leninists, it becomes clear to me that they have the same sort of brainrot as tankies.

So now that the truth about Tesseract is finally out in the open, I can freely choose to not take part in your “nice little mini-fediverse.” I mainly use this platform to create the gay transfem equivalent of your “dick joke” humor. However, since even that is too radical for you, I humbly request that this account be blacklisted from your client as well.

I think your goal is admirable, but centralizing the blocklist defeats the purpose of a decentralized social media network.

We already have filtering at the instance level, so it seems to me that any client level filtering features must increase user/admin agency, rather than putting that agency in the hands of the client dev (regardless of how noble they may feel their opinions are).

There’s no good way to do what I wanted without either sounding like a dick, calling people out, or otherwise causing mass ire.

It sounds like you fully understand why this was so negatively received.

I really hope people stop harassing you. Despite our differences, we are all on the same platform for one reason or another, and we all deserve respect and some nuanced understanding.

Most of your message is good, but you might want to clarify a couple things if your message is meant to be an olive branch.

I think your goal is admirable

Nothing about what they did is admirable. Taking away the agency of others, ignoring the concept of consent, and then victim blaming when the victims speak out against their aggressors is deplorable.

we all deserve respect and some nuanced understanding.

They actively, deliberately, and covertly deprived others of this basic courtesy. The social contract requires all parties participate. Those who break the contract are no longer protected by it. So far, asimons has expressed no remorse whatsoever nor any intention of re-honoring the social contract. They have shown themselves in comment after comment to be the very “toxic” thing they accuse others of being.

Before extending an olive branch, be sure it is not a rabid dog you are shaking it at.

That’s fair. I do think the desire to make Lemmy a better place is admirable, but this is obviously misguided (if I’m being very generous).

The instances filtered in his blocklist (including the one I am on) could imply something heinous… But I want to give this person the benefit of the doubt here. Maybe it’s ignorance? Maybe they truly believe blahaj.zone and db0 are dangerous extremists? Maybe this was just momentary petty power tripping?

Idk much about this person outside of this cataclysmic rake-stepping, but I believe a community free from hate is built with understanding.

I also believe intolerance cannot be tolerated, and I am glad this platform stood up for our friends on the block list.

All you need to do is make the list customizable at both an instance and user level

Oh and provide some justification for the bans within the list itself

Let the users decide. Let the instance admins have control. That’s how the fedi works

Also please add me to the list please

Edit: on or off isn’t enough. Also add me to the list plz.

Edit 2: also you need to announce features better. Someone pointed the changelog where this feature was apparently announced and I can’t find it at all!!! (Add me to the list plz)

There was never a good reason for a frontend to PREVENTIVELY hide users, instances, and comments using regex.

Instances updated only to discover that their default frontend blocked their home instance.

The only reason was to censor the Fediverse.

And looking at who was being censored, this was entirely a bigoted and authoritarian intent.

That said, I agree that far too many people on Lemmy seem to think that calling for violent execution somehow becomes legal if the target is a bad person.

Most of the complaints I see about moderators being "pro-Israel/Fascism/Billionaires” turn out to be due to them removing comments that could get the instance in legal trouble, but obviously the moderators taking action against them means they’re secretly eeevil.

It’s one of the things that most frustrates me about the Fediverse. Some users are incapable of nuance and see any slight against them as a sign that the other person is The Enemy.

Which also ties into why your attempt at fixing it was wrong. The backlash against it was always going to outweigh any nebulous good you thought such a system would achieve. You’ve destroyed any chance at affecting change that you could have had by taking another route.

I’ve been a moderator (and am a moderator) many places and… that is true of most of them. Doesn’t matter how blatant the rule violation or how clearly the rule was stated, a lot of people take very personal offence. It’s one reason many mods in many places end up rather jaded and stop bothering to explain because it doesn’t help most of the time.

I try my best to be patient first, because I’ve found that like 25% of the time or so I can at least get someone to understand that it wasn’t personal or anything like that. I’ve certainly had people in subreddits I’ve moderated as well on an open-source game forum I host/administer/moderate turn around and become good community members.

But it is moderately rare, and these days after I’ve been patient and try to explain once, I go to zero tolerance quickly and just ban, mute, move on.

It is a pervasive problem of anonymous or semi-anonymous internet. Generally a price worth paying considering alternatives (identity requirements), but it is a choice and a price.

If the project is yours, I just looked at the blacklist. Why is litter.catbox.moe on there, but not catbox.moe? They have the same content policy. Litter.catbox.moe just has a limited permitted lifetime for uploaded files to live, and a larger max filesize. I can’t imagine why someone would have an issue with just one but not the other.

I mean, personally I don’t have an issue with either host, but it just seems like a weird criteria, blacklisting one of the two and permitting the other.

I still cannot comprehend why the fuck you would feel the need to implement a block list on a frontend, instead of just making your own damn server and using that.

As I have told my more religious family members and a few coworkers - You are entitled to your opinion, and to practice your beliefs (or preferences, in this case) in your own home, but you can go fuck yourself if you feel the need to force those opinions on others.

Your actions are significantly more toxic and damaging to the fediverse than anything most of those on your fuck ass list have done.

You should delete your fediverse account and get off the internet, maybe you will end up a happier person more able to cope with life that way.

I’m not sure if it’s more weird or sad that you thought you could secretly create a blocklist of users for those using your frontend. And let’s not pretend it wasn’t a secret like you said in your little statement, which you only had to write because you know you’re in the wrong for doing this weird shit.

Are you STILL HERE playing HIGH AND MIGHTY like YOU were wronged? You flaccid dishcloth, you absolute clownshoe. You feeble, broken little child. You unconscionable narcissist.

You really just have no introspection at all, do you?

Dude. You surreptitiously tried to make yourself the modking of all instances via FOSS. This is not harassment. This is consequence. Suck it up.
