See this is proof that capitalism is the best economic system.
Unregulated capitalism has never been tried but success stories like this is evidence that the concept works.
exactly this.
As much as this is basically an ad, I agree.
Support businesses that don’t take any shit because then you know they actually care about providing a service in addition to making money, as opposed to strictly the latter no holds barred.
Costco was very clear with the tariffs that they would eat the cost and just sue because they felt it was illegal. Low and behold, it was illegal, and they are getting a refund after not raising costs like everyone else. And their customers loved them for it.
This is actually their entire buisness model as well. They don’t really make much money from their products. They make almost 100% profit from their memberships. If I remember right, over 2/3 of their total profit comes from membership revenue. So if they piss people off and make them cancel their membership, that would really fuck them over.
Costco Canada employee here…
Idk if it’s the same in the US, but up here the highest markup on anything is 14% above cost.
I think it is about the same here.
Who would’ve thought that doing the right thing is good for public sentiment.
Costco get most of its meat from US farms**
do americans even realise how garbage their meat is?
do americans even realise how garbage their meat is?
No, they don’t. Part of it is the media doesn’t report on it, but part of it is it’s illegal to take photos or get video from inside of slaughterhouses. Also, a lot of people don’t want to know, because it would be inconvenient. They like the taste of meat, and they don’t want to quit eating it.
The Best Democracy Money Can Buy
the mass produced, factory butchered and packaged shit that might even be sent overseas for processing and come back… yea, that shit can be pretty bad… especially the ‘tubes’ of unknown origins.
the stuff raised out on the farm (sis’ parents used to raise their own, 2 head at a time), or the neighbor’s farm (where we all get it from now)? not the same product. not.even.close.
How much of that goes to Costco, though?
Small farms sell to livestock auctions.
Those tend to have buyers from large meat processing plants.
That meat is then sold as premium grade, usually steak and roast cuts.
The rest is then used for ground meat, or pet feed.
Unless it’s chicken. Then everyone is in the same leaky boat. Seriously, chicken is nasty. Every single country in the world has switched to fast growing chicks, that need to be slaughtered long before adulthood because they get too big to survive on their own.
Then they’re too young to really develop flavor, so the processed meat has to be plumped further with injections of salted chicken broth.
The farm is only part of it. Whether they were raised on a factory farm or your neighbor’s farm, they all go to the same slaughterhouse. Unless you know farmers who do their own slaughtering, which I highly doubt.
That isn’t necessarily better, you have higher rates of accidental additions if you don’t operate the saws perfectly at diy small scale.
So garbage that international demand makes us the 4th biggest exporter of beef. Get over yourself.
4th place is 3rd loser.
lmao. doesnt make your meat good.
Second biggest beef producer (just a hair behind Brazil), but only fourth biggest exporter. Both of which are natural consequences of just being a large landmass.
Most US produced beef is banned in countries with actual food standards due to the use of artificial growth hormones.
do you realize how dumb you sound?
America has the greatest, highest quality meat available.
is it dumber than that statement?
But trump really wants you to touch his meat… especially on the island.
And only if you’re not old enough to drive yet.
The meat comes from Russia I’d wager . The CIA director travelled on the c17 Globemaster heavy lift aircraft to deliver Fort Knox as payment.
(I’m being conspiracy sarcastic btw)
If you didn’t say you were being sarcastic, you could probably get bluanon types to run with it.
Just don’t eat meat, it’s better for everyone that way.
This is the ethically and factually correct approach.
Doesn’t fix this issue though. The lettuce and tofu are contaminated now.
Cook the lettuce, and you should have already been cooking the tofu.
I know you’re joking, but the bacteria itself often isn’t what gets you sick. It’s the waste products of the bacteria that gets you sick. Those don’t cook out.
In the case of the lettuce parasites, cooking does render them safe.
I wasn’t joking, kilt lettuce with potato cubes fried in the bacon fat and crumbles of crispy bacon is amazing.
You can also stirfry it with some garlic, and ginger, salt, and sugar, just make sure you get the oil super hot before you add the lettuce, cook for like 30 seconds, then throw in cornstarch slurry and remove from heat. Maybe fry it with some blanched carrots, bell pepper, w/e.
Theres also soup.
Yeah, I’m not cooking lettuce. I’ll just grow my own lettuce for salad and collard greens for cooking.
Yes, but i honestly can’t stop myself
Just avoid buying it.
Simply avoiding meat is a lot easier than going completely vegan. You have a very good motivator to do so right now too.
Have you tried petting a cow? I eat way less beef after a random cow on the side of the road rolled over so I could rub its belly.
Have you heard of the idea of vegan plus bacon? Something like someone said i would go vegan but i just love bacon. And the response was, ok, go vegan plus bacon.
Basically don’t think of it as all or nothing. Being as vegan as you possibly can is better than not trying. Imperfect veganism still makes a difference.
I am working out a diet that is primarily vegan but get to keep chicken for now. Until i figure out something else to replace it. Also sometimes pork, but only sometimes.
If everyone did it there would be far less need for factory farming, harmful inhumane killing of animals and damage to the environment as we would all be eating sustainable and environmentally friendlier foods. Just with some bacon.
This mentality has me and my family eating dramatically less meat than we otherwise would and I hope to continue that slide, I think it’s a great strategy most folks who want to try can use to get started.
As an ethical vegan, I both love and hate this.
I get it. In the end it’s a half measure that allows lots of suffering and may keep folks comfortable with that in a way that a stricter commitment doesn’t risk.
For me it kind of “unlocked” a focus toward harm reduction rather than promises to try hard someday, and allowed us to begin on the path. I’m not sure where we will stop, but we weren’t on it before.
I hope you know I’m not blaming you. I went from “I think vegetarians have a point” to “well, I guess I’m vegetarian now” to “fuck being given dairy at every event, I’ll be vegan now”, so I can’t fault your for reducing over time.
(I could say I then went to “burn-the-abattoirs vegan”, but in truth, burning the slaughterhouses seemed like the obvious moral position once you see what they do in them.)
Anyway, I support your efforts to reduce the pain and suffering.
If only…
lol @ pushing ethical consumerism in 2026. let me just shop at the place that isn’t actively trying to kill everyone!!!
that’ll make a real difference!!!
What is the alternative ethical option?
Starve, I guess
Yeah not sure how Costco is supposed to be a good choice.
It’s a less bad choice. That’s the best option most people will have.
I don’t even think that’s true in most cases.
Most people don’t live near a place that sells ethically sourced food.
any good brands that make sure to enslave their farmers?
If one lives near a Costco, then there are almost certainly more ethical options in the same area.
What are some examples? I’d genuinely like to know.
Entirely depends on the local area. I have two Costcos in my area. I also have several farmers’ markets, a co-op, and several grocers that sell fair trade and local products.
Is Costco somewhere anyone can shop at in the USA? In the UK they only allow people who work in select professions.
There’s no restriction based on professions. You just have to pay the annual membership fee, which is about $60.
Not sure if this is what they were talking about, but there are some Costcos that only sell to businesses. Have a bit of an uproar where I live because one downtown is switching to that, and there’s not many other grocery options in the area.
The regular Costco members can still shop at a business center but the merchandise is not targeted towards them.
The business centers sell things like cases of cups, plates, disposable silverware, legs, shoulders and other large cuts of meat, cases of common restaurant ingredients, salt and pepper shakers in bulk for tables etc.
We go to the business center by us every so often because they carry real American cheese in bulk, not the Kraft garbage the regular Costco has.
In Canada, you used to have to have a public service ID or select professional societies. They got rid of that a couple decades ago. Now you pay the free for a regular or executive membership and you’re good.
Huh? What’s this about specific professions?

There’s more than that kind of membership
As I understand from what I’ve read on there is to actually physically shop in their shops (rather than only only) it’s that or be a business. Unless I’m completely mis reading it.
It used to be like that in the US a few decades ago, and then they transitioned into a “professional store hours” and “public store hours” situation. Now they’ve scrapped the restrictions entirely for the normal warehouses and in highly populated areas they built more warehouses called “Costco Business” warehouses.
You have to pay for a membership in the US
Trump’s Mystery Meat - a topic no one ever wants to discuss. Ever.
Nay!
And yet has been discussed publicly, at large, in court, and even during a presidential address or two, albeit indirectly.
I almost bought some Taylor Farms salad mix from Costco yesterday before my wife pointed out the brand name (what can I say, it was on sale and I’m a sucker for a discount). Costco is better than most retailers, but there are still plenty of problematic brands that they do carry.
We can trust this Corp this time guys I swear. The bar is serving food that isn’t poisonous guys I swear.
Not taking away from that sentiment for 99% of other companies, but this is a common Costco W.
Still big corpo, still profit motivated obviously, but as far as mega corps go this is one of the good ones.
Taylor farms salads are sold in Costco
People still have to survive. We still have to shop. Sorry I can’t grow a food forest in my 800 sq. Ft. Apartment and live off composting my own shit to grow heirloom tomatos.
You got somewhere I can find food for cheap that at least gives the thinnest veneer of not trying to be as awful as possible? Do you? No, you’re a shitstain hatemongrel who offers nothing but kicking people who don’t have the priveledge of options in a capitalist hellscape.
Assuming you aren’t one of those hate bots mentioned in a previous post then please quickly and permanently go fuck yourself.
Neat!
Costco is a good, socially responsible corporation, most aren’t.
can’t tell if you and this oop is serious lol
There had to be at least one?
one what?
In its dying palm, the world holds one last flake of hope:
a chip of faded paint,
scraped from the logo of an empire
that outlived its promise.yeah that’s how it feels like.
Fun US-Canada trade Trump demand. Canada should not be allowed to inspect US milk to detect if it is cancer milk instead of organic. I doubt Americans will be allowed to know if they are buying US prime or mystery meat pretending to be prime either.
Costco runs it’s own rigorous food inspection program
