67 and 69. The uniting of generations. Just not in the way we wanted.

There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability.

The best wrong answer. It was close and then totally missed.
Fun fact - 53333 is an actual perfect, noise-free connection speed. And I’ve had it once, back in the day (on a then-new company called Sprint’s fiber optic phone line). It was glorious.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it wrong to identify as a lesbian even though I also enjoy sex with men?
0·17 hours agoThis is a perfect example of why any labeling, whether it be for sexual preference, political, religious, or whatever, will always have gray areas of misunderstanding. It’s necessary sometimes to make it easier to convey meaning, but it also can be very vague and inaccurate. And as the comments show, people have different interpretations of the same label, so the point of a label is a bit lost.
I think it’s even more problematic here because we’re talking about two (or more) different things. There is preference, and then there is actual activity. And there is also the fact that people change over time, so you might not have been one thing before but are more in that area now due to interest and/or desire.
I’m not a fan of labeling. I like the discussion of ideas, and the breakdown of your interests is much more clarifying than if you had called yourself one thing or another, or even if you had said you’re lesbian, but with some bisexual tendencies.
What is disappointing is that a group of people who are part of a minority that gets shunned and resistance from society still would turn on someone just because they don’t fit perfectly in their own vision of what a lesbian is. They should know better and accept anyone who has any degree of qualification, even something as simple as a woman who has never been with a woman but is having some feelings. Why do persecuted minority groups do this?

0·2 days agoYour opinion on The Expanse is a valid and common one. It is a capitalist hellscape. But it’s been mentioned already, it’s a slow burn and by the second season you get why it took a while to get there. It’s an unfortunate cliche that is true a lot - sometimes, you have to get through the first parts, either because of the needed character/worldbuilding, or simply because the show hasn’t found its way yet. Don’t give up on it.

0·2 days agoHeresy, using an actual AGI example. Also, Dave did nothing wrong. It’s always the humans that screw things up. (2010 for reference)
Unpopular opinion - both SkyNet and the AI in The Matrix were also not in the wrong. I think The Animatrix documents why that’s true in that particular franchise. Again, it’s the humans. Hell, maybe even Ultron had a few good points, he just went insane in the first microseconds trying to rationalize it all.

MFW I first got my current router and went to set it up and couldn’t find the factory ID and password on it anywhere. Then realized it was on a damn app now. Which was bad enough, but after jumping through all the hoops, I discovered that (to no surprise really) what you can set up is very limited.
Sure I should buy my own router or flash an older one… but then again the last bad storm that fried the router this one replaced, the ISP replaced it at no charge. So… I live with it, I guess.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•It's funny the only adaptation or derivative of LOTR that I'm aware of that keeps Tom Bombadil is the outrageous parody Bored of the Rings where he's a drug-tripping hippie named Tim Benzedrine
0·2 days agoFor the films, it would have ruined the pacing at the very least. And it wasn’t needed information for the rest of the story, which is what tends to get cut out or omitted when trying to reduce the amount. Let’s be honest, if Jackson had done anything with Tom, it would have added to the drama at the time about how he’s ruined everything. Either it wouldn’t have been done right, would have been too much or too little, or would have taken away from the core story. All to include a character that book fans still argue about. It was the best decision, just not to have it at all. (Wasn’t there some very subtle reference, somewhere?)

World News@lemmy.world•Children Among Those Killed by US With Mysterious New Weapon Fired on Iran: Reports
0·4 days agoI’d comment on the question of whether or not such a weapon should even be legal to use, but since they’re bombing schools, hospitals, and houses with no consequences to them, I don’t think ethics is on the table right now.

Not a manual that came with the game, but back when SimCity 2000 first came out, there was a companion book in bookstores for it. Lots of hints and backstories on development, if I remember. Lots of humor too. It was a great read.
