What if the school had some data like… Oh I don’t know… The number of enrolments of 4 year olds for the last n years. That would certainly be an interesting data point.

It just doesn’t make any sense to me at all to suggest that people are making these decisions with census data.

State education departments don’t have surplus funds. There are no schools sitting empty because someone is waiting for the census to tell them there are no students in the area. Likewise there are no schools being built because the census says there are some 3 year olds I’m the area.

Education departments allocate their scarce resources based on enrolments. That’s it.

Seriously, this is truly the dumbest example.

Quite obviously, a decision like that would be made with reference to the number of kids at the school?!

If the school really was poorly attended, the states education department would know whether it’s capacity can be absorbed by other schools, and would already be trying to close the school to minimise costs.

If a school was actually going to be closed and the land sold, town planners would conduct a thorough review and actually ask stakeholders, like local residents, parents, other schools, etcetera.

What they wouldn’t bother to do is look at census data. I can assure you that schools aren’t being built just because the census says there’s demand

To be clear: I’m not suggesting some elections should be thrown, to allow ONP to win some seats or form government. Of course, every election needs to be fought.

Its more like, the silver lining is that populist governments can’t govern, and in Australia an ONO state government would likely prevent an ONP federal government.

This was some commentary on ABC’s politics now podcast: the federal labor party is going to be challenged by ONP, but if ONP wins some state govt elections it will take the heat out of their surge.

The census matters because it provides data that governments, businesses, and communities use to fund public services, plan infrastructure, and ensure fair political representation.

I just don’t believe this is true, it’s the PR story delivered by the census team to motivate people to fill it out, but it just doesn’t withstand a moment’s critical thought.

Governments aren’t building hospitals and schools on the basis of what the census data says, they measure demand at existing facilities.

There is no government decision which is not better informed by other means.

Firstly, if this were true, it’s not an appropriate reason to be collecting names.

Secondly, it’s absolutely not true.

In the before times in a “census” you might have shown up and gotten counted and given your name.

Also… The best way to be rid of ONP is for them to win a couple of elections so everyone can watch their candidates implode.

Its a census. They want to gather as much data as they can. The data would be incomplete without it.

That said, I’m a vocal objector to the census generally. It just shouldn’t be a thing any more. They certainly shouldn’t be collecting identifying information.
