The Walking Dead, Avatar(the Airbender kind), League of Legends, Assassin’s Creed, A Song of Ice & Fire, Mass Effect, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, all 30ish years old tops so modern and immensely popular.

Halo, Borderlands, Bioshock, Left 4 Dead, Dishonored, are all begging for a good remake or relaunch or new addition that would easily launch them to the front of done well.

Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Among Us, Souls-like games, Frozen, Squid Game, so many animes Jujutsu Kaisen, Dungeon Meshi, Naruto, Demon Slayer. The list goes on and on.

There’s a fuck ton of new IPs

Funny thing is, original movies are being made constantly, but usually the good ones end up becoming franchises and, once it becomes a franchise, people then start using it to further complain about lack of original things

Or they wanna say it’s a rehash of old stuff. It’s just zombies, it’s just sci-fi, it’s just medieval fantasy.

Not realizing all of those and more were created like by the 1st century AD at the latest but likely soo far before that. The epic of Gilgamesh and Egyptian mythology alone cover almost all bases. Toss in True History by Lucien of Samosata and that’s basically every IP concept covered.

Yeah, the most annoying thing is when you point out recent or upcoming original movies and they say those are just ripoffs of other movies. They broaden their criteria of original to mean it can’t even superficially resemble anything that already exists. That’s almost literally impossible

Slops are a great hope, since they can prove a concept with a low budget ; and budget is usually that creators miss the most.

Slops can be made without the validation of some majors, and even if they don’t match the market. So without being retouched by marketing people into becoming a tasteless thing.

That doesn’t prevent slops to be mostly shit, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if some new great things come from them…

I’m happy to see more movies like Dust Bunny, Hail Mary, and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t die.

But, I also like TV shows better, Dark Matter, The Gentlemen, Lucky, etc. Because, they go longer and have time to dive into the details. Movies seem rushed and truncated to me after watching a series of eight or ten episodes now.

I don’t want another huge franchise, I just want somewhat original stories NOT based in established universes. It’s better if they don’t go on for 10 sequels spaced years apart. That format is better suited to TV, where we get a whole season across a few weeks, one or two seasons then it’s done, and we get something fresh.

Young people don’t go to movies as much as older people used to. They don’t care for “boomer media”, they want games, interaction. We’re in the middle of a big upheaval in entertainment, it will be interesting to see what comes of this. I think the next big thing won’t be another big franchise, but some sort of AR, multi-participant interactive media. Not Fortnight, or Minecraft, etc. Something more approachable for the masses and more short-term, with a conclusion.

Because, they go longer and have time to dive into the details. Movies seem rushed and truncated to me after watching a series of eight or ten episodes now.

OTOH, a lot of TV shows spend too much time on filler content in an attempt to both increase runtime but also build anticipation. Only to have the resolution at the end of the season rushed with zero room for the emotional outcome to expand and relax. Which gives it an unsatisfying feeling.

Then, movies (that are done well) make efficient use of their time budget to tell the story and not have multiple hours of empty filler content to pad out the runtime.

A common issue is early super hero movies was the constant re-introduction of various characters, instead of just telling the story. Which resulted in half the movie re-explaining who these various people are and then only half to tell the actual story.

Both TV and movies have their place, it just depends on the material how well it fits.

For example, I don’t think Lord of the Rings would have worked as a TV show, and I don’t think Wheel of Time would work as movies.

That being said, one of the things that killed WoT was the baffling decision to veer so far from the source material. The first season spent more than half the runtime on small minor things, or things that never even happened.

Depends if you are talking about the novels or the TV series (or though the former is still considerably newer than Star Wars). The TV series was very influential on modern TV and spawned a whole generation of “Game of Thones-like” gritty and violent historical dramas. It also popularised the trope of no character being safe from a violent twist.

It’s exactly the point. “A new Star Wars or Marvel within our lifetime” was the prediction, and we’re arguing that one such example has already existed. Unless you are a child and weren’t alive/conscious and therefore don’t consider it within your lifetime?

Exactly how are you reading that wrong? A new Star Wars or Marvel. A new massive universe. As the next sentence you didn’t quote says , something new and original not based on existing properties. Not specifically those two things. They’re just examples. This is basic reading comprehension.

A Long Earth TV series, not necessarily based on the book I just think it’s an interesting universe.
The Bobbyverse books made into movies.
More of Garrick, he can be doing literally anything, I just want more of him.
And yet more Star Wars stuff, but KOTOR era.

Given what a shitshow Lord Miller made of Project Hail Mary, I am not holding out much hope for Bobiverse. I must merely content myself with the hope that, eventually, The Infinite Extent will be released in some way where I don’t have to support fucking Amazon to read it.

Can you imagine how awful it’s going to be to watch them try to explain the light-speed lag between events in different systems before SCUT? They might just take away SCUT’s invention and put it in Bob’s original Heaven-1 design, so that they don’t have to deal with all of the relativistic time effects.

The starship in the movie was more realistic than the one in the book. You’d have to be an absolute moron to design a ship you fly with a touchscreen.

I’m sorry, your complaint is that the book’s crew module had a touchscreen control system? Given how little the actual ship’s systems are even touched on in the movie (let alone how little they matter, compared to those in the book), that’s a bit rich. As far as astrophage being a deus-ex-machina, it is ABSOLUTELY turned into an unmitigated deus ex machina in the movie. Instead of any detail, we get several worthless minutes of Jessica Chastain singing karaoke, because that’s what we were all waiting for. In the book, the precise mechanisms and rules by which astrophage operates are explored, in excruciating detail, so that the actual solution comes logically from the problem, and all of the further problems follow from secondary-school-level scientific principles. Is it convenient? Certainly, but it earns the convenience by actually using it to explain not only how the astrophage is able to do what it does with scientific reasoning, but also neatly explains how that ties into the possibility of panspermia, and has enough detail in how it functions that the only part that isn’t fully and scientifically explained without any hand-waving is how the astrophage can allow the radiation through its phospholipid bilayer to get to whatever specialised organelle manages the mass-energy conversion (and, of course, the precise method of that conversion, which you would not expect any sci-fi writer to explain).

It seems you might be the type of person who complains that Tau Zero didn’t give you a working schematic of an Alcubierre Drive, and thus it is “simultaneously the source and solution to all of the crew’s problems”

Do you complain that Heaven’s River fails to describe the chemical structure of the ceramic used to construct a million interlocking bishop rings? Because, surely, such inconsistencies, especially in other aspects of the Bobiverse such as “subspace”, are likely to make you judderingly irate! I shudder to think what you would think of a movie set in the Bobiverse, especially one made by a production company that removes all scientific explanation in favour of handwaving and big CGI set pieces that aren’t in the original and serve no narrative purpose. Oh wait, that was my point, wasn’t it?

I only read the book because of the movie. I like both, they both work to the strengths of their own mediums. And I’m sure a lot more people read and appreciate the book because the movie exists.

It’s possible to have criticisms of the thing you enjoy. I also liked Bobiverse, even though bob is a boring self-insert protagonist, I appreciate that he mostly exists as a means to get from idea to idea.

Wholeheartedly agree that Bob is self-insert, and has precious few character flaws for the first several books aside from his general tendency to live vicariously through the other life forms he comes across (notably his “family” outburst with the delta’s), and it isn’t clear just how much his attitudes are character flaws until the fifth book, when he actually has to start facing the consequences of his own choices, in his own reflections through replicative drift and the Skippy debacle.

In the movie version of PHM, things just… happen. There’s no explanation for why they happen, and the entire point of the book is the process by which such mysteries are solved. It is a book about piecing together truth from first principles. Every single tension and catharsis in that book comes from using what little information grace and rocky can glean with their limited tools to divine the truth, either about grace’s own journey leading up to the launch, or about the problem of the petrova line, or about stopping the taumoeba, or even the last question of how grace can survive on a planet where the entire biosphere is based on mercury and cadmium. The movie neatly severs literally every single mystery by just having the characters divine the answers, apropos of nothing, by simple guesswork. Little evidence, no reasoning, and it just works, and we are expected to clap, because they saved the day. No. It did not “do fine” with “explaining” things.

I agree! And the entire film felt like it had annoying background music in a lame “80’s straight to VHS” movie kinda way. Or a mediocre montage of what could’ve been a fine movie. I think this a choice undercuts moments of work between the two of them that could’ve been used for the tension of figuring things out.

Then again I felt the same way about Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Mark my words: we haven’t seen the end of “hit songs.” Think of songs like “I Want It That Way.” Or “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” “Despacito.” There may be 2-3 other examples I’m omitting, but my point is I’m not talking local band shit. I’m predicting (hell, prophesying) another very popular song. Think millions of people listening to a song, loving it, talking about it, covering it. Hell maybe it’ll even have a music video. I think we’ll see another one in our lifetimes.
